U21s defeat Napoli at Viareggio Cup
Club's youngsters started the Viareggio Cup 2012 with a win, beating Napoli 0-2. Goals came courtesy of Zinho Gano and Fries Deschilder.
With Jannes Vansteenkiste, Fries Deschilder and Zinho Gano (photo), coach Philippe Clement had three first team players at his disposal at the youth tournament in Tuscany. All three of them started from kick-off against Napoli. Seven minutes into the game, Zinho Gano opened the score for Club. Napoli pushed on for the equaliser, but it was Club that doubled the score, this time through Fries Deschilder, defeating Napoli goalie Crispino with a neat shot. The Italians insisted through Insigne, but didn't make it to the back of the nets.
In the second half, Napoli tried scoring a tying goal, but thanks to Club goalie Jordy Maes and the post they were unable to. The chance to score came for De Vena, but his effort from very close range was to no avail. Club stood ground, and kept the score at 0-2.
In the other game of the group, a selection of Serie D players beat Varese 4-1. Club is now in first place, together with the Serie D selection. On Thursday, the two teams are set to meet, with first place at stake.
Club: Maes - Vanwildemeersch, Savaete, Vanneste, Vansteenkiste - Verstraete, Lagrou, Deschilder (92' Leroy) - Botaka (68' De Cuyper), Gano (78' Vandewalle), Gunst.
Goals: 7' Gano (0-1), 26' Deschilder (0-2).
