Club draw 1-1 with Waasland-Beveren
Club Brugge had to settle for one point following a 1-1 draw. Hans Vanaken opened the scoring from the spot with only fifteen minutes on the clock, but a Clasie own goal in stoppage time spoiled the party.
Coach Ivan Leko changed his line-up in four positions compared to the team that had beaten Standard last Thursday in the second leg of the cup. Ivan Tomečak replaced the suspended Dion Cools and in midfield Jordy Clasie came on for the slightly injured Ruud Vormer. Jelle Vossen and Emmanuel Dennis were the forwards instead of Wesley and the injured Diaby. In absence of Vormer, Hans Vanaken wore the captain's armband.
Waasland-Beveren were lively from the start and immediately Vermeer was put to the test when he had to parry away Jans' strike and shortly after Boljevic headed just over the crossbar. Club reacted but goalkeeper Roef was quickly off his line before Dennis could have been dangerous. Ampomah tried his luck from distance, but after that attempt the Blues got a firmer grip on the match. Roef had to claw away Mitrovic' header and Vanaken fired a free-kick into the wall after a handball by Boljevic which referee Vissers deemed to have been just outside the penalty box.
Halfway the first half Club had the best chance to open the scoring when Roef spilled Vossen's shot, but Dennis and Vanaken couldn't poke home the rebound. Afterwards both sides were equal to each other with little danger apart from a Thelin header and a Vanaken free-kick. But then, just before the break both sides were given a great opportunity to take the lead at half-time. The home side were awarded a penalty when Scholz fouled Thelin, but Vermeer saved the spot kick of the Swede. And moments after the penalty miss Roef had to deny Vanaken and Dennis. In between those chances an unmarked Boljevic headed a cross over the crossbar.
After the break Club had the upper hand right away pinning down the home side on their own half. Tomečak saw his effort go over the target, while Roef was forced into making a save by Wesley and Dennis. Wesley then scuffed another effort wide.
Ivan Leko subbed Ruud Vormer on after an hour play to put more pressure on the home side's defence. Club kept dominating but weren't helped by the referee when he let play continue after Boljevic played the ball with his elbow inside the box. Fifteen minutes later the referee had no other choice than to award one when Caufriez hacked down Dennis inside the area. Hans Vanaken sent Roef the other way and Club finally broke the deadlock!
Waasland-Beveren had no alternative than to throw everything they had at Club, which gave the Blues more space to hit them on the break. Dennis and Nakambe saw their efforts thwarted by Roef and Wesley's goal was disallowed for offside. A few minutes before the end Roef did well to save a cheeky chip by the subbed on Refaelov. Club didn't kill the game and paid the price in stoppage time when Demir's strike took a huge deflection on Clasie to beat Vermeer: 1-1.
