Club draws 1-1 with Lazio Roma

Club Brugge has started its Champions League campagin with four points out of a possible six. After last week's victory at Zenit, now Club had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Lazio. The Italians broke the deadlock early in the game, but Hans Vanaken pulled Club level just before half-time with a spot kick. In the second half Club created a number of fine opportunities, but couldn't score that well-deserved goal.

Simon Mignolet and Odilon Kossounou had been abstent because of a positive COVID-19 test but were back and appeared in the starting line-up right away. Simon Deli, back from an injury, played alongside Kossounou in the heart of defence. Horvath, Mechele and Ricca were on the substitutes' bench. Captain Ruud Vormer started the game as well, while in front Clement opted for the same two as last week against Zenit: Emmanuel Dennis and Charles De Ketelaere. Lang, Schrijvers and Badji had to settle for the bench.

At Lazio, a few strongholds were missing due to injuries and positive corona tests, but coach Simone Inzaghi was still able to put together a team with ten internationals. The visitors were best out of the starting blocks with a first warning after just five minutes, but Mignolet wasn't disturbed by Correa's shot. After the opening minutes Club had more control of the game, but it were the visitors that opened the scoring. Joaquin Correa cut inside and curled it beautifully past Mignolet.

It was the signal for the blue and black to up the tempo. This resulted in a first good chance halfway through the first half: Lazio failed to clear Diatta's cross, which fell in the feet of De Ketelaere but he scuffed his finish centimeters wide.

Club was constantly pushing, but there were no real opportunities. Nevertheless, Club were able to head into the dressing room with a 1-1 draw. After a foul by Patric on Rits, referee Taylor was asked by the VAR to review what happened and he then pointed to the spot. Hans Vanaken didn't miss from the spot: 1-1.

After the break Club tried to build momentum. De Ketelaere could have been on his way to Reina alone, but his just missed his control. Shortly after, an even better chance followed: Rits launched Dennis on the right-hand side and the Nigerian tried to place the ball between the legs of Reina, but it just took a deflection on his inner thigh and went out. Moments later, De Ketelaere found Vanaken at the far post, but he placed the ball wide.

On the hour mark, Club was really the better side. Rits headed towards goal, but Reina kept it out with a great reflex save. Another clear-cut chance for the blue and black not much later. Diatta whipped in a good cross, which was just missed by Dennis but met with Sobol at the far post. The Ukrainian defender volleyed it wide of the empty net - unlucky. Minutes later Vanaken could have had a second, but he failed to get on target as well.

Lazio wasn't too dangerous during that period of play. Milinkovic-Savic's header over the crossbar was the only danger from the visitors.

Fifteen minutes before the end, Milinkovic-Savic had a better chance. He darted into the area on a perfectly weighted pass from the defence, but Mignolet had rushed out to keep it out.

Club had the final say in this game with two opportunities, but Vormer couldn't get his left-footed effort from close range on target and De Ketelaere's shot took a huge deflection so it looped over the crossbar on the roof of the net.

It remained 1-1, meaning that the blue and black have started their Champions League campaign with four points of two games. Club is still joined first in Group F, together with Lazio Roma.
