Club suffers a 4-1 defeat at PSG

Club's European campaign has stranded in Paris. The blue and black suffered a 4-1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the final Champions League group stage fixture. Kylian Mbappé bagged a brace before the ten-minute mark and Lionel Messi added two more goals to his name as well. In between La Pulga's goals, Mats Rits pulled one back for Club.

Coach Philippe Clement tinkered with his line-up for this final group stage match. Compared to Saturday's match against Seraing, the coach made four changes: Stanley Nsoki replaced Brandon Mechele in defence and in midfield Mats Rits, Éder Balanta and Hans Vanaken formed the three-man midfield again. Charles De Ketelaere moved to the front, together with Noa Lang. Ruud Vormer, Noah Mbamba and Bas Dost had to settle for the bench. Cisse Sandra, who found the back of the net last Saturday, was among the starters in Paris. PSG coach Maurico Pochettino handpicked Di Mario, Messi and Mbappé to score the goals.

In order to finish third and qualify for the Europa League, the blue and black had to get a better result in Paris than RB Leipzig at home against Manchester City. That dream was shattered almost immediately. After only one minute Mignolet parried away Nuno Mendes' drive, but into the feet of Kylian Mbappé who struck home via the inside of the far post. Shortly after the opener Wijnaldum stung the fists of Club's goalie. Seven minutes into the match Di Maria found Mbappé with a perfectly weighted pass and the Frenchman bagged his brace.

A hard lesson for Club, who nevertheless didn't just give up. While De Ketelaere and Lang couldn't set up Sandra, Vanaken did. Sandra tried his luck, but the 17-year-old saw his effort palmed away by Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper was then forced into making a diving save on a low drive by Rits.

Mignolet was kept busy as well by Di Maria and Messi, while Nsoki and Mata thwarted Wijnaldum and Messi. Nevertheless, a few minutes before the half-time break PSG found the back of the net again. Mbappé teed up Messi and the Argentinian brushed it home from the edge of the area. Mbappé was close to completing a first-half hat-trick, but he crashed the ball against the crossbar.

After the break Club went looking for a goal. Lang supplied a cross for Mats Rits, but he headed the ball over the bar. A few minutes later De Ketelaere's volley flew straight into the arms of Donnarumma. The best chance was for Noa Lang. The Dutchman cut inside from the wing and pulled the trigger, but Donnarumma tipped the ball around the post.

The hosts responded through with two efforts by Di Maria, but it was Club that pulled one back halfway the second half. After a good attacking move by Lang, the winger played the ball into the path of Rits who scored with a low effort. It was the sign for PSG to up the tempo again. Mignolet was forced into making a save by Mbappé. Fifteen minutes before the end Club's No.1 was beaten a fourth time - this time from the spot. Substitute Van der Brempt brought down Lionel Messi inside the penalty area and referee Manzano pointed to the spot. Messi himself behind the ball and he made no mistake: 4-1.

In the closing minutes of match Club tried to get a goal back again, but Mata's strike flew into the crowd and Ruud Vormer couldn't get his free-kick on target. The score remained 4-1 for the home side which means Club's European campaign ends in Paris. Even a win at the Parc des Princes wouldn't have sufficed as RB Leipzig beat Manchester City 2-1.
