Ivan Leko: “Excuses are for losers”

The press faced an unhappy Ivan Leko at the conclusion of the Eupen game. Club's faulty first half football even angered its T1.

“The worst 45 minutes ever since I started here, it was downright dramatic. 25 minutes into the game I was yet to see any of the Club values. No sweat, no stamina, no mental focus, nothing. There may well be attenuating circumstances: decompression after the games against Zulte, the fact that we have a comfortable lead in the league. Not the best of mindsets to pay the red lanterns a visit. But excuses are for losers. Apart from Vormer and Mechele I could have substituted everyone, we could have been 3-0 or 4-0 down.”

The second half was different in every respect. “After the break, we got into our regular form, pinning Eupen against its own goal, creating pressure and danger. But the game leaves a foul aftertaste anyway. This was not the mentality a top team needs. At Club only the game you are playing right now counts, you can't just lean back and count on a good performance in the past. Congrats, however, to our opponents too. They adapted well to this game, surprised us and played well.”
