After the final game of the season, we had a talk with Wesley Moraes, Jelle Vossen, Lior Refaelov, Ethan Horvath and coach Michel Preud’homme.

Wesley MORAES

“Hope to continue my progress next season”

Plenty of reasons for Wesley Moraes to gloat, having just netted his fifth in these Play-offs. With Izquierdo out injured, the young Brazilian was awarded another start in attack, to the despair of the visiting defense. “I'm very happy with my goal, a goal that put the remainder of the game in the right direction. Our coach had asked us to give it one more go in this final game of the season, and I think we pulled it off brilliantly. I hope I will be able to continue my porgress with the same flow. This doesn't mean I will be demanding my place in the Starting XI from now on, but I intend to make it difficult for the coach to leave me aside. This 2-1 win secured second place, and we are disappointed because I reckon much more was in it for us. As a player, we also hear the rumours as to whether our coach will remain for next season or not, so I would like to thank our current T1 for the many things he has taught me so far. Positioning, shielding a ball, etc. Now it's time for holiday, but I will definitely keep tabs on my training schedule in order to gear up for the start of the new season.” (FDC)

Jelle VOSSEN

“A defeat was not an option”

Just like Wesley Jelle Vossen took quite a beating at times from the Gent defense, but it looked like that didn't dampen his spirits. The strong forward kept running, and just before the end he was replaced by Lex Immers. “Relief is our share after this 2-1 victory. We're happy to have won this particularly important game. Beforehand, we knew we had lost out on the title, and that it would take all we had in that final game to make it to second place. We did well, I reckon. A defeat just wasn't an option, but we had the confidence and the power to beat Gent here. We have shown that we are simply unbeatable at home this season, which made the job at hand easier on us than on Gent. The fact that we opened the score also helped us out, as Gent now needed to score twice. When they scored, it didn't rattle our cage, but you never know a second goal might fall from the skies. Fortunately that didn't happen. Now it's time for a well-deserved break before we go for it with renewed hope in June.” (FDC)

Lior REFAELOV

“Most difficult season of my career”

Starting from kick-off and girding the captain's band, Lior Refaelov helped Club securing second place. “That second spot was very important to us and to the entire club. Today's mission was to hold on to it, after we lost out on the title. Thanks to a serious effort by the players, we managed to do so. Wesley put in a great performacne, he was available for the entire team. It's good to end the season with a good feeling. This must have been the most difficult season of my career. I hope it's all over now, and that I can join the national team and gear up for next season. Closing this season with a positive spirit is vital, as it has been very tough on me, both mentally and physically. I want to clear my head, so I can prepare mentally for the next season here at Club Brugge.” (KN)

Ethan HORVATH

“Happy to be runners-up”

Even if he was chanceless to dany Saief, goalie Ethan Horvath neutralised a number of Gent attacks. “Claiming that second spot was vital for us. Reaching the CL prelims is just a bit more lustrous than the EL prelims. We're disappointed not to have made it to the title, but the coach told us that with that second place, we were the best Belgian team in the past three years. Turning in second, and making it to the Champions League prelims is also a feat.”
The past couple of games came with lots of playing opportunities for the young American, who's hoping for a fixed place in next year's Starting XI. “My first year here was good, even if I realised I wouldn't be playing straight away. But I worked hard at training, and coach Preud’homme gave me the chance to play. I was allowed a couple of games to gain some experience. There was that mistake in my first entire game at Charleroi, but I put that in the past and just kept going. There will be lots of moments when I will have to fight for my spot between the posts, both here and elsewhere. We'll see what will happen next season, but I will be fighting for my spot from day one.” (KN)

Michel PREUD’HOMME

“Announce my decision next week”

Michel Preud’homme watched his team conclude the season with a 2-1 win at the hands of AA Gent. “A rocky start for us. We wanted to put early pressure, but with the many changes and the different way of playing, it took some time before we got a grip on the game. Fortunately we scored from a textbook situation. In the second half we doubled our lead, which really put us in the driving seat, but Gent then scored a deserved 2-1. Fortunately we held on to the win. It was important to beat a direct opponent. That's what makes Club Brugge end second, first and second in the past three years, adding in two Cup Finals. That's quite the record. Everything considered, you can say that Club Brugge has become a top team again.”
After the final whistle, Michel Preud’homme joined his technical staff for a round around the stadium. The press saw this as an indication that he would be signing out, but the coach would not hear of a confirmation of this news. “In the last four seasons I joined the staff four times; today was no different in that respect. We have always been backed by a fabulous home crowd, so we wanted to thank them for it. As to my own plans, those will be revealed next week. Last season, the board and I also only met when the season was finished, and that's what we will do again this year.” (SF)
