Philippe Clement
Some people just don't require any introduction. A living legend at Club Brugge. In 10 seasons at Blauw-Zwart, Philippe Clement joined in 359 games, and scored 51. As a defender and a defensive pawn in midfield, our number six proved a trustworthy rock, and a true torment to every forward. He helped in making Jan Breydel an unsurpassable fortress.
It was in Antwerp that Clement earned his stripes. As of 1991, he regularly joined the Beerschot first team on their way to the championship in third division. Having played just about every game in 1994-1995, the 21-year old made the move to KRC Genk, helping the team to promotion to the top flight.
What followed was even more resounding. In 1998, Genk ended as runners-up after Club Brugge, defeating that same Club Brugge 4-0 in a disheartening Cup Final. It earned him a move to Englisch Coventry City, where he had a taste of the Premier League. That season, he also earned his first cap. A number of injuries kept Clement off the pitches all too often, and Clement returned to Belgium after just one season. It was at Club Brugge that Clement earned his biggest successes: two league wins, three Belgian Cups, and four Supercups. The end of his career was with the team where it all began: Beerschot.
Concluding his playing career in 2011, Fille joined the Club technical staff as defensive lines coach and U21 coach. A number of interims as assistant coach and head coach later, Clement is offered an upgrade for his excellent work, as T2 under Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido. His steady growth was maintained under Michel Preud'homme, and Waasland-Beveren saw him as the ideal coach to train its young group. After Waasland-Beveren, KRC Genk soon followed, and with much success. In 2019, the team won the title, only to see Clement return to his dream club, with lots of experience under his arm and a head full of ideas.
