Hans Vanaken: "4-1 are too heavy figures"
"I think we should have taken the lead in the first half," Hans Vanaken said just after the game. "I think we had enough chances to get ahead 1-2. Then in the second half you might have had a little more space for Tzolis or Forbs, but that wasn't the case now. And then the 2-1 falls too early after halftime. After that we also got some chances, but in the end you have to take more risks and Atlético took maximum advantage of that.
I think 4-1 is too heavy a number, especially if you look at the course of the match. It's a bit sour, but getting seven goals against in two games is just too much. There was also some bad luck involved in that, of course, but nevertheless, like last season, we can rightly be proud of our Champions League campaign. No 1/8th final this season, but from now on all focus goes to the league."
Simon Mignolet: "The scenario did not go the way we thought it would"
"In the locker room at halftime, given the chances, we still felt that we were the better team," Simon Mignolet opened his press talk afterwards. "To be honest, I think at halftime it should have been 0-2 for us, but at that point it was 1-1 on the scoreboard. I take full credit for their first goal, because that ball should never really go in. Nevertheless, it happened.
The second half then starts disastrously for us with immediately the 2-1 and then you have to chase again. As time passes, you have to throw everything open and Madrid of course has the players to finish it off on the counter. We got some more half chances, but the scenario of the match didn't go the way we expected.
We knew it was going to be a difficult match anyway, but we made it difficult for ourselves. Overall, Atlético Madrid is the deserved winner, although we certainly had opportunities to advance another round. Obviously we are all disappointed, but we will also deal with that as a group."
