Club bags the points at Genk (1-2)

Club Brugge has grabbed the three points visiting KRC Genk. The 1-2 win came courtesy of an excellent first half, with a logical 0-1 lead after Vanaken headed in the opener. After the break, the home side was awarded two spot kicks, the first missed by Dessers, but the second with more success by Bongonda. Club seemed to be missing out on some valuable points, but was rewarded anyway as Youssouph Badji made it 1-2 with seven minutes to go.

Three changes to the team that suffered defeat at the hands of Beerschot last week: Simon Deli, fully recovered, coming on for Éder Balanta, while Emmanuel Dennis filled the position of the injured Krépin Diatta at right wing. Up front, David Okereke was preferred over Siebe Schrijvers in a three-forward system.

An eager Blauw-Zwart grabbed the hosts by the throat from the start, resulting in an early warning as Vormer curled his free-kick towards the top hand corner, but saw how Vukovic still got a hand to the ball, pushing it against the post. Shortly after, Badji also hit the woodwork, albeit from off-side position. After twenty minutes, another excellent chance followed as Vormer took Vanaken's cross in one go, but this time Cuesta saved the day for Genk clearing the ball from the goal line.

Club was clearly in charge of things, and finally took the lead halfway through the first half. An industrious Dennis stormed on the right wing, producing an excellent assist for Vanaken heading in the opener. Ten minutes later on, Club had the chance to double its lead: a fantastic attack through Dennis and Badji ended up with Mats Rits, who saw his shot blocked by Vukovic. Other than an Ito shot sailing high over, Genk had little say.

Having conceded a goal, the hosts now started pushing forward, resulting in some early warnings. Bongonda went inside the box and was tripped by Mata, seeing the home side awarded a spot kick. Dessers, however, aimed the ball against the wrong side of the post leaving the score at 0-1. Club also had its chances through Deli, Okereke and Sobol, but without success. The best chance to make it 0-2 came for Dennis, coming inches close of tapping in Badji's fine cross.

Club seemed in control, but was forced to concede the equaliser upon the hour mark. Slipping past Mignolet, Bongonda eagerly went for the ground, and after reviewing the footage, ref Van Driessche again pointed towards the spot, this time duly taken by Bongonda to make it all to play for. Genk now really started believing it could happen, seeing a Muñoz shot sail over. On the other side of the pitch, Okereke had a fine action in store, but saw his effort fly over the crossbar.

Things remained tight in the closing minutes. Blauw-Zwart kept looking for that winning goal and maintained its threats. De Ketelaere, just on, proved eventful, but it was that other replacement, Siebe Schrijvers, who was at the basis of Club's second of the afternoon, curling a corner kick towards the first post where Youssouph Badji headed in the winner off the ground in goal. Club had a few more chances to further widen the gap, but the score remained at 1-2.
