Club beats Cercle 1-2 in city derby

Club Brugge won the derby against Cercle 1-2. The hosts opened the scoring, but thanks to goals by Brandon Mechele and Noa Lang Club remains the team of Bruges.

Coach Philippe Clement wrote down the same eleven names on the tactical board as last Sunday in the 3-2 win against Genk. Club had most of the ball from the opening minute and created the first half-chance when Mechele's header went over the crossbar.

Cercle played well-organised in the back, which made it difficult for Club to find some space in the attacking third, while trying to hurt Club with counterattacking moves. After fifteen minutes defender Pavlovic almost opened the scoring, but he was thwarted by Mignolet. Good save from Migs!

That chance boosted Cercle's morale. First Vitinho powered through on the left-hand side, but his finish went wide and Biancone's long-range effort was an easy catch for Mignolet.

But just before the half-hour mark Cercle broke the deadlock deadlock when Anthony Musaba was given too much time and space in front of goal and he hammered it in from close range.

Cercle's goal sparked Club's offensive intensions. De Ketelaere and Vanaken couldn't get at the end of a pass by Noa Lang and when Vormer's effort fell into the feet of Dost, Didillon kept out the shot by the Dutchman with his foot.

Club upped the pressure on Cercle and leveled the score. Kossounou found Brandon Mechele in front of goal who headed in the equaliser. On the stroke of half-time De Ketelaere tried to get Dost into position, but Didillon had rushed out and gathered the ball.

More of the same after the break, with Club dictating the pace of the game. Dost just couldn't reach Lang's cross and Vormer's strike, on De Ketelaere's pass, took a deflection to sail over the crossbar. A few minutes later Lang couldn't reach a teammate in front of goal to poke home.

Club took the lead on the hour mark when Dost latched onto Vanaken's perfectly-weighted pass and he feeded the ball to Lang who tapped it into the empty net.

With the lead, the blue and black lowered the pace of the game again. Cercle tried to level again, but Mignolet wasn't troubled by the tame shots of Musaba and Hotic.

On the other side of the pitch substitute David Okereke proved dangerous. His first attempt was blocked and afterwards his pass just didn't reach Dost.

In the final minutes of the derby Didillon kept out an effort by Okereke while Denkey skied his finish over Mignolet's goal. Okereke found the back of the net in the dying seconds, but he had strayed offside.

Club beat Cercle 1-2 and wins the city derby once again. The blue and black retain their 12-point cushion over second in the league KRC Genk.
