Carl Hoefkens let three players make their debut in his first official game as head coach of Club Brugge: Owen Otasowie - who already joined Club from Wolves last year - played in a three-man defence with Mata and Mechele. The American replaced the suspended Nsoki. Noah Mbamba patrolled the midfield with Vormer and Vanaken in front of him, while Skov Olsen and Meijer played as wing-back. The latter replaced Buchanan who picked up a small injury during the warm-up. In front Jutglà played alongisde Noa Lang. Charles De Ketelaere started on the bench.
Club started the game lively and created three solid chances in the opening quarter of an hour. Vormer teed up Jutglà, but the Spaniard missed the target. Later he got at the end of a great Skov Olsen cross, but the ball hobbled just wide of the far post. In between Jutglà's chances Vormer saw an effort parried away by Gent goalie Roef.
The only thing Gent had to show for themselves was a low sharp cross from Cuypers that went past everyone.
Club dictated the pace of the game, but Gent tried to be dangerous on the break. Ten minutes before the half-time break Nurio's strike went just over the crossbar and a few minutes later Tissoudali even beat Mignolet, but he had strayed offside.
Not Gent, but Club opened the scoring. Immediately after the disallowed goal, Andreas Skov Olsen cut inside from the right-hand side and his slightly deflected shot went against the back of the net. Gent responded before the break with a header by Cuypers, but Mignolet tipped it over the bar.
The visitors looked for the equalizer, right from the start of the second half. Tissoudali latched on a through ball by Cuypers, but the Morocco international pulled his effort wide of the far post. Hjulsager tried it from outside the box, but Mignolet palmed away the Dane's strike.
Coach Hoefkens made some changes to try and get the upperhand again. Skov Olsen and Owen Otasowie were replaced by Antonio Nusa and Denis Odoi.
Club failed to create any danger, apart from a header from Mechele. Hoefkens gave two more players the chance to make their debut for the blue and black: Lynnt Audoor and Cyle Larin came on for Mbamba and Jutglà. But Gent remained the more dangerous side. Hjulsager's volley sailed wide, Tissoudali hit the side-netting after his shot took a deflection on Odoi and Samoise missed the target as well.
The closing minutes of the match were intense. Gent couldn't break through Club's defence, while the blue and black tried to put the game to bed with a second goal via Larin. The Canadian couldn't get at the end of Lang's cross and a few minutes later he saw his right-footed strike parried away by Roef.
The game ended 1-0 and Club Brugge lifted the Supercup for the 17th time!
