Club Brugge - Real Madrid: Club Facts

We'll be hearing the Champions League hymne one more time at Jan Breydel when we entertain Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid on Wednesday evening. We hope just one thing: to qualify for the Europa League. We'll be keeping one eye on the other game in Group A.

JUBILEE FOR CLEMENT

For the first time since August 16 Simon Deli was not in Clement's starting eleven last Saturday. The Ivorian defender can play his tenth European match for Club on Wednesday.

Both Éder Balanta and Federico Ricca opened their account for Club Brugge. There have been sixteen South American goalscorers for the blue and black.

Hans Vanaken played his 225th official match for Club Brugge last Saturday. For Simon Mignolet the game against his former team was his 25th.

It'll be Philippe Clement's 25th European match as a coach tomorrow. In 2012 he was interim coach for Club's European game against Newcastle. Last season he played no less than fourteen European fixtures with KRC Genk. And this season he has ten under his belt.

Coach Philippe Clement can count on captain Ruud Vormer again who missed half of this Champions League campaign following a red card at Bernabéu. But Clement will have to miss Krépin Diatta and Clinton Mata who were cautioned a second time after the exuberant celibrations at Istanbul when Diatta equalised in stoppage time.

Odilon Kossounou is possibly Mata's replacer. The Ivorian defender made his Champions League debut against PSG and is the 100th player to play for Club Brugge in the Champions League group stage.

POSITIVE FIGURES FOR CLUB

Club's fiftieth official game of calendar year 2019 is a nice one: Champions League record winner Real Madrid travels to Jan Breydel on this sixth and last group stage matchday. It's Club's 10th European match this season.

Both sides met already three times before ... and Club comes out top. In the 1976-77 European Cup Club went through to the second round after eliminating Real Madrid, following a scoreless draw at Malaga (Real Madrid had to play there after incidents in the previous season) and a 2-0 victory at home. One of the greatest performances of Club at that time.

And Club is still unbeaten against Real. This season, in Madrid, Dennis gave Club a double lead, but Ramos and Casemiro - when Club were down to ten - kept one point home at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Club won six of its previous 12 home games against Spanish teams. Four times the Spanish visitors walked away with all three points. Real Madrid lost six of its ten away games on Belgian soil.

RECORD CHAMPIONS IN THE UCL

Real Madrid was founded 117 years ago - ten and a half years later than club Brugge. Just like at Club Brugge, the presence of British immigrants was of great importance. From the beginning Madrid played in white. The royal title "Real" was awarded by king Alfonso XIII in 1920, accompagnied with the crown in their crest.

It took Real only three years to lift their first of nineteen Copa del Reys. Los Merengues have been playing in the Primera Division since 1929, which they have won 33 times so far - a record.

Real have been achieving well in all European competitions. They won the first European Cup in 1956 and carried home the Champions League trophee thirteen times so far. In the trophy cabinet you can find two UEFA Cup trophees, the UEFA Supercup (4) and the International Cup (7).

This is Real's 50th European campaign, which is a record in Europe. With 24 Champions League campaigns they are equally good as FC Barcelona.

Since the 2-2 draw against Club Brugge, Real Madrid won twice against Galatasaray (0-1 and 6-0) and drew level with PSG (2-2). The Brazilian Rodrygo scored a hat-trick against Galatasaray making him the youngest goal scorer in this campaign.

After fifteen games in La Liga, Real Madrid gathered 34 points. They are joined first with FC Barcelona who have a better goal ratio. After the game against Club, Real face two difficult teams on the road. They visit Valencia CF and FC Barcelona.

The cards have been dealt in Group A for the two Champions League spots. PSG is the group winner, Real Madrid is sure of the second place. Only thing to decide: who takes third place and goes through to the Europa League.

A third place entitles a ticket for the UEFA Europa League Round of 32. Fourth place means elimination. Club is currently third with three points, one point more than Galatasaray. The Turkish side face PSG at Paris at the same time as Club hosts Real. Club is always sure of that third place if Galatasaray doens't beat PSG, thanks to Diatta's late equaliser in Istanbul.

To be absolute sure, Club Brugge needs to beat Real Madrid.

Zinédine Zidane might possibly have to do without defender Marcelo, midfielder James Rodríguez and forwards Marco Asensio, Lucas Vázquez and Eden Hazard due to injuries.

GERMAN REFEREE

The German Tobias Stieler has been appointed referee for Wednesday. He will be assisted by his countrymen Mike Pickel and Christian Gittelmann. Harm Osmers is the fourth official, Christian Dingert is the Video Assistant Referee.

Stieler is already the third German referee in this years European campaign. Earlier Felix Brych (Club-LASK 2-1) and Daniel Siebert (Club-PSG 0-5) whistled a game. It's the 29th European match for Club under a German ref.
