Club grabs the points at KV Ostend (1-2)
Visiting KV Ostend, Club claimed its first win of 2019. Despite an early KVO goal from free kick through Vanlerberghe, Club managed to turn the game around with two penalty kicks, both duly taken by Vanaken and Wesley. The win brings Club closer to leaders Genk, narrowing the gap to seven units.
The first away game of the year saw two changes in Ivan Leko's outfit. Sofyan Amrabat was pulled back one row, replacing Benoît Poulain. On the right wing, Krépin Diatta was preferred over Clinton Mata, while an additional forward was lined up with Siebe Schrijvers. With Genk dropping the points at home, and Antwerp getting stuck at a draw against Standard, a win for Club would be a golden deal in the table. The hope of inching closer was dealt a serious blow, however; a long ball in the opening minute resulted in a free kick for the hosts just outside the box, neatly fired in by Club player on loan Jordi Vanlerberghe.
Fortunately, Club was not impressed by the dire situation, and started lifting the pace. The first threat came through Hans Vanaken, but the Golden Boot was unable to frame his attempt. Another close call for the hosts moments later, as Faes was able to clear a Vormer cross just in time, Schrijvers' one-time shot went over and another attempt by Schrijvers was cleared from the line by Faes. A bit later, Wesley headed Diatta's cross over.
Club was clearly in charge, but found an excellent goalkeeper Dutoit on his way. Twenty minutes into the game, the Frenchman had a superb save in store to paw Denswil's header out of his cage. The home team proved resilient, but was unable to push ahead itself. Five minutes before the break, the equaliser finally seemed to come, but Vanaken't shot, after some great passing by the guests, chipped off Dutoit's fingertips against the post.
After the break, Club's offensive mentality continued, and immediately paid off. Amrabat's shot whizzed over, but a good five minutes later the equaliser finally came. Schrijvers was brought down by Nouri inside the box, and ref Lardot pointed towards the spot. Hans Vanaken did not falter, slotting in the 1-1 past Dutoit.
The goal did Club a world of good, as it even took the lead moments later. Schrijvers first saw his attempt go just wide, but a bit later Vormer's cross was handled by De Bock just inside the box, forcing ref Lardot to award Club another penalty, albeit after the VAR indicated the foul. Vanaken now let Wesley take the spot kick, relentlessly making it 1-2.
Club kept control of the game. Ostend had two more slight chances, but Sakala's header went wide, and Zivkovic, just on, took too much time all alone in front of goal. No further worries for a combattive Club, forgetting to widen the gap even more through Vormer, Wesley and Openda. The sole downer of the afternoon was Nakamba's second booking, bringing the visitors down to ten for the final minute of the game. The win now takes Club closer to leaders Genk, who are still seven points ahead.
