Club lose 3-1 at Standard
Club Brugge suffered their first league defeat at Standard. Carcela and Emond gave the hosts a 2-0 lead, but the blue and black came back into the game thanks to Luyindama's own goal. But when Marin restored Standard's two-goal lead, it was over for Club.
Ivan Leko changed his line-up in three ways compared to last Wednesday's game against Atlético Madrid. Clinton Mata, Matej Mitrović and Emmanuel Dennis were given the nod. Thibault Vlietinck, Poulain and Siebe Schrijvers had to settle for the bench.
The hosts took the game by the scruff of the neck with early chances for Cavanda and Mpoku.
Ten minutes into the game Standard were very close when Letica kept Emond's header out with a brilliant reflex save. Club picked up the pace halfway the first half. Vanaken headed Vormer's free-kick just wide and Dennis failed to blast in on Wesley's back-pass.
Standard were eager and very lively and even upped the tempo after half an hour play. Carcela found Emond in front of goal but he tapped wide, Djenepe's shot took a touch and went out and Laifis scuffed his finish wide.
But less than ten minutes before the half-time whistle the Reds broke the deadlock. Marin feeded Carcela and he rushed towards goal to slot home. A few moments later Mpoku almost doubled the lead, but his strike went just wide.
Club wanted to get back into the game after the break. Dennis immediately picked out Wesley in front of a goal, but the Brazilian headed the cross into the arms of Ochoa.
A few minutes later Wesley fired his shot over the goal and Ochoa was quick off his line to smother the ball when Dennis was on his way to equalise. On the other side of the pitch Letica was equal to Carcela's shot and efforts by Cimirot and Emond went over and wide.
Just when Club were looking to equalise, Standard doubled their lead through Emond. Club had a big problem now, but responded quickly through Hans Vanaken who played the ball in front of goal towards Wesley at the far post, but Luyindama beat his own goalkeeper when trying to slide away the cross: 2-1.
Club now tried to rescue one point in the final fifteen minutes of the match, but Rits' good long-range strike took a deflection on a defender. Standard crushed Club's hope of getting one point of this game when they killed the game ten minutes before the end. After a corner-kick from Vormer, Marin collected the ball and hit Club hard on the break as Danjuma slipped. The Romanian midfielder rushed towards Letica and side-footed Club's No. 1.
Club Brugge head into the international break with this first league defeat of the season.
