Club loses cup final against Antwerp 0-1

Club Brugge failed to celebrate the double, after having won the league. The blue and black lost the Belgian cup final against Antwerp 0-1. Lior Refaelov scored the only goal of the evening halfway the first half.

Philippe Clement was eventually able to count on Mechele, Balanta, Dennis and Ricca, all four of whom suffered from digestive complaints. Mechele and Balanta were in the starting eleven, Dennis and Ricca started on the bench. Mata, Deli and Diatta - who were missing against Lille last week due to minor injuries - were deemed match fit again. In the front, Charles De Ketelaere played in support of deep striker David Okereke.

Antwerp coach Ivan Leko's surprise of the evening was Lamkel Zé. The Cameroonian wasn't part of Antwerp's first team during the preperation but immediately proved his value for The Great Old. Mignolet was forced into making a good save by Mbokani and a few moments later he tipped over Hongla's long-distance effort. Club's No. 1 also had to parry away two shots by Juklerød and Refaelov.

The blue and black struggled to get into the game, while Antwerp played well-organized and were dangerous on the break. After 25 minutes, that led to the goal for Antwerp. Juklerød pushed forward on the left-hand side and squared it to Lior Refaelov who tapped in easily. The former Club Brugge player scored for the third time in a cup final. Club tried to respond swiftly, but Antwerp defended better.

At the start of the second half, Club immediately shifted up two gears. De Ketelaere picked out Sobol with a cross, who headed the ball to Vanaken but Seck was just able to clear the ball.

While Antwerp were deadly on the counterattack, Club started to create some chances. Deli just couldn't put his foot against a Sobol free-kick, while a shot from the Ukrainian went over the crossbar.

Seven minutes into the second half, Youssouph Badji made his official debut for Club Brugge. The Senegalese immediately came into the spotlight. Badji headed the ball on a cross by Vormer, but Antwerp goalie Matijas kept it out with a fine save. Moments later, the attacker freed himself from his opponent with a nice move and fired it towards the far corner, but again Matijas kept it out.

Fifteen minutes before time, Philippe Clement brought on Schrijvers and Rits. Club camped on the half of Antwerp and upped the pressure. The best chance was for Diatta ten minutes before the end on a cross by Schrijvers, but the ball went just over the goal.

Five minutes later, Schrijvers himself was also close to the equalizer: his bang towards the far corner went just went. Club continued to look for openings in the closing minutes, but failed to score. No double for the blue and black after a disappointing night.
