Club misses qualification by a hair against Lazio

Club Brugge was a whisker away of a miracle in the Champions League. Ruud Vormer had cancelled out Correa's opening goal before Club conceded a penalty goal by Immobile and a red card by Sobol. Hans Vanaken pulled level with fifteen minutes on the clock and De Ketelaere slammed the winning goal against the underside of the bar in stoppage time. It stayed 2-2 which means the blue and black bow out of the Champions League and are into the Europa League after the winter break.

Philippe Clement made four changes compared to Saturday's team that had beaten STVV. Clinton Mata returned on the right-hand side and was accompanied by Federico Ricca in the heart of defence. Ruud Vormer had recovered from his stomach complaints and Krépin Diatta was back from injury. Van der Brempt, Mechele, Rits and Dennis were on the bench.

Lazio only needed one point to advance to the knockout stage of the Champions League and let the ball mostly to Club, only to be dangerous on the break. Mignolet first made a save on a header by Milinkovic-Savic, but after twelve minutes the goalie was beaten. Mignolet was forced into making a diving save on Luis Alberto's shot and the ball landed straight in the path of Joaquin Correa who tapped in. But Lazio's lead didn't last long. Three minutes after the opening goal, Reina spilled the ball on Noa Lang's long-distance shot, Ruud Vormer stabbed home the rebound.

The goal boosted Club's moral. De Ketelaere's left-footed finish from outside the box flew just wide and Vormer couldn't get his effort on target either. Halfway the first half, with the game balanced between the two sides, Mata brought down Immobile inside the area. The Italian forward converted the penalty himself by sending Mignolet the wrong way.

Club tried to react again when Diatta picked out De Ketelaere in front of goal, but Hoedt cleared it for the hosts. To make matters worse, Club were down to ten after forty minutes when Eduard Sobol was booked a second time.

Club had to go through with ten for the remainder of the match. Just before half-time Noa Lang had been sacrificed. He had to come off for Simon Deli to give Club more defensive stability.

The hosts wanted to put the game to bed quickly, but Correa's effort went wide, Milinkovic-Savic' free-kick flew over the crossbar and Mignolet kept out Marusic' low drive.

Club weathered the storm and created a good chance on the hour mark. Hans Vanaken darted into the penalty area and his effort took a deflection before it ended up in the side-netting. On the other side of the pitch Mignolet wasn't troubled by the efforts of Correa and Milinkovic-Savic, while Immobile curled a good chance over the crossbar.

Club clawed themselves back into the game with fifteen minutes on the clock when Vormer whipped in a great cross in front of goal and Vanaken headed in the equaliser.

The final minutes were extremely intense. Lazio were merely focussed on defending the draw, while Club was trying to force a third goal and the qualification. Into stoppage time, first Vormer fired a free-kick into the defensive wall, but Club's best chance fell in the final seconds of the match. An attempt by Vormer fell into the feet of De Ketelaere on the left-hand side, inside the box, and he slammed the ball against the underside of the crossbar. Club almost found the so important third goal, but had to settle for a draw.

Club collected eight points in this campaign and bows out of the Champions League
