Club puts a resounding end to 2019 with a clear 4-0

Club Brugge ended 2019 in style, leaving a hapless ZulteWaregem behind with a 4-0 win. Krépin Diatta put Blauw-Zwart in the lead, and saw his opener followed up with two Okereke goals after sixty minutes. With his first league goal of the season, Ruud Vormer took care of dessert on this fine Boxing Day.

The team that had drawn at AA Gent on Sunday was changed in two positions: Eduard Sobol came on for Federico Ricca at left back, while Percy Tau made way for Siebe Schrijvers up front, the South African out for family reasons. There had been question marks behind Krépin Diatta's start, but those proved unnecessary. From the opening minute, Club took care of possession, without leading to clear chances, however. Sobol produced some magic on the left, but was unable to reach a team mate, while Bossut came first to deny Schrijvers upon a Dennis cross.

With the rain pouring now by now, the game retained its monodirectional  character, with Club setting up camp on ZulteWaregem's half. The first real chance of the game ended against the back of the nets; half an hour played, Schrijvers got in control inside the box, sidestepped his opponent to find Diatta by the far post, sliding in the opener.

Even with one goal behind, ZulteWaregem set up a double defense. To boot, Club's play was too slow to dismantle the solid organisation. With minutes on the clock, Dennis suddenly escaped, and even scored, but the Nigerian's goal was cancelled out due to off-side. Essevee only once came close to Simon Mignolet, but Club's goalie had no trouble getting hold of Seck's feeble attempt.

With the second half just kicked off, the visitors started pusing forward a bit more, with long range attempts by Larin and Mensah, but without success. On the other side of the pitch, Vormer saw his cross cleared just before it reached Sobol. Sixty minutes into the game, Dennis made way for David Okereke in what would turn out to be a golden substitution. The Nigerian proved the better of Baudry, and fired Club's second past Bossut.

The goal gave Club wings: Bossut decided to dribbel inside the box but forgot all about Schrijvers, who forgot to capitalise on that error. Moments later, however, Okereke cut inside neatly, and curled the ball in the far corner in what was a magnificent goal. Club now kept coming: Vormer saw his free kick end up against the crossbar, and Schrijvers' ball through to Vormer was cleared in the nick of time.

With ten minutes to go, ZulteWaregem threated too, but Kossounou, just on for an injured Mata, was able to clear the ball just in front of the goal mound. On th eother side of the pitch Okereke wanted to go for a clean hattrick, but his shot went just over. The final word, however, was for Ruud Vormer. Without a league goal until then, the Dutchman made the most of Sobol's pull-back, firing in his first in the far corner. An easy win for Blauw-Zwart, ending the year with a nice bonus over its competition.
