Club stuck at draw at KV Kortrijk
Despite dominating the entire game and creating several chances, Club Brugge has been unable to get past KV Kortrijk.
The team that had kept Atlético Madrid from scoring on Tuesday was changed in four positions. In the back, Matej Mitrović came on for the suspended Benoît Poulain, while the wings were replenished with some real wingers as Mata and Dennis reclaimed their starting spots. Mats Rits also made his way back into the team, referring Ngonge, Openda and the injured Amrabat to the bench.
Weather conditions were dire, but this didn't keep Club from taking a fine start to the game, monopolising the ball and creating a couple of opportunities. Wesley's pass to Vanaken fell short, while Nakamba's shot went in the stands. Moments later, Dennis heading opportunity also went missing. A compact Kortrijk gave Club a hard time trying to get through their solid organisation.
The visitors were in charge, but halfway through the first half, the hosts also posed a threat with a shot by Avenatti, duly saved by Horvath. With the coffee break lurking around the corner, Club pushed on, which lead to a great attack teeing up Mats Rits in front of goal, but Kaminski had a stunning reflex in store to keep Rits from scoring the deserved opener. Two more first half saves, denying Rits and a header by Denswil, made Kaminski the most industrious home player in the first half.
After the break, Club tried lifting the tempo, but it was Kortrijk that insisted the first through Chevalier, whose shot went high over. Club reacted through Wesley, whose deflected shot went wide. Sixty minutes played, Chevalier had another go but Horvath proved the better of the Frenchman's shot.
The game needed a goal to open up, and halfway through the second half Club came close to breaking the deadlock. A Vormer cross found Vanaken, who saw his header saved in the knick of time, and a bit later Openda's shot met with the crossbar. The goal came moments later, as Dennis headed in a corner kick, but the goal was denied after the VAR indicated Denswil had pushed a home defender.
A tense final couple of minutes saw chances for both sides. Mitrović' header went wide, while Kaminski pawed away Wesley's shot. In the other side of the pitch Ezekiel tried his luck, but his shot got blocked. The game ended without goals, and Club traveled home with just the one point. The draw gives leaders Genk an excellent opportunity to widen the gap at the top of the table.
