THE GAME

It's been 26 years since Blauw-Zwart faced STVV in a cup game. In total, the two teams met only 3 times before in the cup competition. In 1963-64, the 1/16th final was won 1-0 by Club thanks to a goal by Johny Thio. In 1995-96, there was the double confrontation in the cup's semi-final. Club won the home match 3-1 thanks to goals by Robert Špehar (2x) and Gert Claessens and beat STVV in the return game with the same result. Lorenzo Staelens (2x) and Gert Claessens scored the goals.

Sint-Truiden visited Jan Breydel earlier this season and were beaten 3-0 thanks to goals by Hans Vanaken, Roman Yaremchuk and Andreas Skov Olsen.

Since the cup reform in 1963, Club reached the 1/8th final of the cup 45 times. Club Brugge is the record cup winner with 11 wins. But the last win dates back to 2015. STVV has been able to play the cup final twice, but lost just as many times. In 1971 they lost 2-1 after extra-time against Beerschot VAC and in 2003 the game ended 3-1 in favour of RAA La Louvière.

MILESTONES

  • Eduard Sobol can play his 125th official match for Club Brugge.
  • Casper Nielsen can play his 25th match for Blauw-Zwart.
  • Academy graduate Lynnt Audoor could play his 10th match for Club.
  • Both Brandon Mechele and Hans Vanaken could be involved in their 30th cup game for the blue and black.
  • Roman Yaremchuk can play his 10th Belgian cup game, after having played 9 for AA Gent.

THE MAN IN BLACK

Lothar D'Hondt was appointed referee for this game. He will be assisted by linesmen Romain Devillers and Philippe Vandecauter. The fourth official is Wim Smet. There is no VAR in this round yet, but there will be from the quarter-finals onwards. It is Blauw-Zwart's 13th official match with D'Hondt as ref, with the 28-year-old ref whistling STVV's match for the 14th time. Club's 5 home matches under his guidance ended in 3 wins and 2 draws. Once before, D'Hondt whistled a game between the two teams. In December 2019, Club Brugge then went on to win 1-2 at Staaien in the league.
