Club suffer 1-0 defeat at Anderlecht
Club Brugge have lost the top game against Anderlecht with the slightest of margins. It was an evenly matched fixture with just the goal of Teodorczyk to seperate the sides shortly after the break. Club Brugge's lead on Anderlecht is now only three more points.
Ivan Leko made two changes to his starting eleven compared to last week when Club faced Gent. Vladimir Gabulov was given the thumbs up over Ethan Horvath to replace Kenneth Vermeer in goal, as the Dutchman is ruled out for the remainder of the season. On the left-hand side Anthony Limbombe reclaimed his starting berth after his injury.
It was a good high-paced start from both sides with Anderlecht holding the ball, but Club had the first real chance. After just five minutes Diaby latched onto a through ball by Vormer, but smashed it against the woodwork. A few minutes later Vormer picked out Vanaken with a cross, but the midfielder just couldn't reach it to tap home. The hosts responded twice in quick succession but Gavulov was equal to Gerkens' shot and Josué Sa's close-range header.
After the high-tempo start the game slowed down a bit, but Anderlecht still created most of the danger. Gerkens was almost on his way to Gabulov, if it wasn't for a superb last-ditch tackle by Mitrović and Gabulov was forced into making a save by Teodorczyk and Marković.
For the Blues it was Limbombe who tested Sels twice, but the Newcastle United loanee parried away both of the attempts. Cools whipped in a ball across the face of goal, but Diaby just couldn't reach it.
After a nervous restart of the game, Anderlecht took the lead quickly inside the second half when Trebel picked out Teodorczyk with a free-kick and the Polish striker headed in from close range. Saief almost finished the game shortly after the opening goal, but he blasted his effort high over Gabulov's goal.
Club were still very much alive and tried to hit back. Diaby aimed his shot over the goal from an acute angle and Refaelov fired wide. On the other side of the pitch Gavulov was forced into making a save by Saief.
The Blues upped the pressure on the home side with a few attempts on goal. Limbombe's effort took a deflection on Sa to go wide, Diaby failed to convert Vanaken's cutback, Mitrović headed Limbombe's cross wide, Denswil failed to head in Vormer's corner kick and substitute Wesley's shot sailed over the target.
Gabulov was equal to the attempts by Morioka and Ganvoula for the home side.
With just ten minutes on the clock Club looked like scoring the equaliser when Diaby latched onto a through ball, rounded Sels and turned the ball into the net. But the goal was chalked off after a VAR review as Diaby was deemed to have strayed offside. A huge mental blow for Club who were unable to equalise in the remaining ten minutes as Sels palmed away Limbombe's shot and Vossen's header went wide.
Due to this defeat Club Brugge are only three points ahead of Anderlecht.
