Club suffers 0-1 defeat against Gent

Club Brugge suffered a 0-1 defeat against AA Gent. The blue and black had plenty of chances, but halfway the second half Ricca beat his own goalkeeper.

Philippe Clement made three changes compared to Thursday's team that won at KV Mechelen. Ruud Vormer tested negative on COVID-19 and returned in the starting eleven, forcing Mats Rits on the bench. Odilon Kossounou moved to midfield as controlling midfielder instead of Éder Balanta. Simon Deli played in the heart of the defence. In front David Okereke was given the nod, as Noa Lang was on the bench following his muscle injury on Thursday.

Club started the game lively and had a first great chance after a couple of minutes, but Bolat tipped away Ricca's header on a cross by De Ketelaere. A couple of minutes later another header sailed over the crossbar and Bolat was equal to a shot by De Ketelaere. Club dictacted the pace of the game, but after fifteen minutes play Yaremchuk slipped through the offside trap and fired at goal, but Mignolet kept it out with a great reflex save.

The blue and black dictacted the pace of the game, pushing Gent on their own half. Vanaken and De Ketelaere played in a cross in front of goal, but there was no one at the other end, while Diatta fired into the arms of Bolat. A De Ketelaere free-kick went over and wide of the target.

Just before half-time Club upped the tempo again: an effort by Vormer from an acute angle took a deflection on a defender and went wide. On the following corner kick Bolat had to palm away Vanaken's header.

More of the same in the second half with Club dominating the game and Gent trying to hit Club on the break. One of those counterattacking moves almost resulted in the opening goal when Yaremchuk headed Castro-Montes' cross against the bar.
Club responded immediately with a good header by Kossounou and a strike by De Ketelaere.

A few minutes later Yaremchuk went on goal again, but Mata thwarted the Ukrainian with a last-ditch tackle.

Halfway the second half there was another break from the visitors and this time they broke deadlock. On a low cross by Bukari, Federico Ricca put the ball in his own goal under pressure by Castro-Montes. Club tried to react immediately, but Diatta found Bolat on his way and the rebound from substitute Rits was blocked. One minute later Rits was sent through on goal, but Bolat saved again.

In the final minutes Club tried to get back into the game. Noa Lang couldn't get the ball past Bolat from a difficult angle and Ricca was stopped after he had darted into the penalty box. Club pushed and pushed, but failed to score the deserved equaliser.

Despite the defeat, Club Brugge still has a two-point cushion over second in the league Racing Genk, who still have a game in hand.
