Club suffers 0-5 defeat against RB Leipzig

Club Brugge suffered a heavy 0-5 Champions League defeat at home against RB Leipzig. The blue and black conceded two onfortunate goals inside the first quarter of an hour and conceded two more before the half-time whistle. Club created some chances in the second half, but it was Leipzig that rubbed salt into the wound with a fifth goal in the dying seconds.

Three changes to the team that had suffered a defeat against Mechelen on Friday. Jack Hendry returned in the heart of the defence, Ignace Van der Brempt and Kamal Sowah played on the wings. Maouassa, Mechele and Vormer had to settle for the substitutes' bench. For Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and head coach Jesse Marsch stayed in Germany following a positive COVID-19 test.

Leipzig had no other alternative than to bag the three points and immediately went out flying. Efforts from Angeliño and Gvardiol sailed wide, while Mignolet was forced into making a save by Mukiele. Club Brugge was completely overpowered and the visitors soon broke the deadlock when Nkunku poked home the rebound after Silva's shot was saved by Mignolet. Five minutes later Sowah hacked down Brobbey inside the box and Emil Forsberg doubled the visitors' lead from the spot.

Club tried to get back into the game, but struggled to create good chances. Sowah floated a cross into the box which was deviated by Dost at goalkeeper Martinez. Leipzig continued to show their attacking prowess with a third goal before the half-time mark. Angeliño picked out André Silva with a cross and the Portugese headed the ball into the far corner.

On the other side of the pitch Van der Brempt saw his cross cleared and Sowah's strike took a deflection before it went wide. On the stroke of half-time Leipzig even made it four when Forsberg hammered in his second of the evening from the edge of the area.

Philippe Clement made two changes at half-time by bringing on Ricca and Rits for Nsoki and Dost. Mats Rits quickly showed himself with a couple of good infiltrations. His first shot was blocked and his second needed to be tipped away by Martinez. A few minutes later the Leipzig goalkeeper thwarted De Ketelaere as well. On the other side of the pitch Lainer and Nkunku put Mignolet to work.

The Germans dropped the tempo and Club was able to restore the balance. On the hour mark De Ketelaere failed to reach Lang and his cross towards towards Vanaken just evaded the midfielder. Ricca had a go twice from distance, but to no avail. For Leipzig Silva recorded two shots, but Mignolet saved the pair.

Fifteen minutes before the end Noa Lang latched onto Vanaken's through ball, but the Dutchman saw his effort parried away by Martinez. That was the closest Club would come to a goal for the remainder of the match. Ten minutes before the end Izquierdo and Wesley came on, but they couldn't force anything either. Deep into stoppage time Leipzig scored once again when Nkunku tapped in another rebound. Because of this defeat Leipzig is now third in Group A.
