Club suffers 1-2 defeat against AA Gent

Club Brugge fell to a 1-2 home defeat against Gent. Hjulsager gave the visitors the lead, after the break Tissoudali doubled it. Charles De Ketelaere halved the deficit with fifteen minutes on the clock, but Club ultimately fell short.

Alfred Schreuder made three changes to his side compared to Wednesday's cup match at AA Gent. Brandon Mechele - suspended last Wednesday - was given the nod, just like Denis Odoi who saw his good stint as a sub rewarded with a spot in the starting eleven. Clinton Mata moved to the right in the three-man defence. Odoi played on the right wing, Tajon Buchanan - back from international duties with Canada - on the left. Mitrović, Hendry and Sobol were left out of Schreuder's eleven. Noa Lang had recovered from COVID-19, but was on the bench.

For the first time time since a while, there were again fans allowed in Jan Breydel - with a maximum of 70 percent. They saw Buchanan with an excellent attacking move in the opening minute, but the Canadian's low cross was cleared. Club started well and created a few chances: Rits' low drive sailed just wide and Odoi's cross was met by Buchanan but he headed centimeters wide of the target. On the other side of the pitch Mignolet responded well on a cross by Hjulsager.

The blue and black upped the pressure on the visitors after the half-hour mark. De Sart thwarted De Ketelaere twice and Roef had come of his line just in time to smother the ball before Vanaken could pick it up. Instead of taking the lead, Club conceded a goal against the run of play. Tissoudali squared the ball to Andrew Hjulsager who slotted home. A few minutes later Tissoudali scored, but he had strayed offside.

On the stroke of half-time Club was close to the equalizer: Vanaken's effort was blocked and Roef tipped away De Ketelaere's header.

Coach Schreuder intervened at half-time, leaving Vormer and Dost inside the dressing room. Andreas Skov Olsen and Sargis Adamyan came on. The latter made his debut for Club after his move on transfer deadline day. Club searched for the equalizer, but it were the visitors who were the more dangerous side. Efforts by Hjulsager and Hanche-Olsen took a touch before they went wide.

For the Blues, Vanaken and Rits failed to get their shot on target, while Skov Olsen's cross was cleared before he could reach a teammate.

No equalizer, but a second goal for the visiting team. On a counterattacking move Tarik Tissoudali fired it past Mignolet. Club responded quickly after this setback. Skov Olsen's perfectly weighted pass sent Adamyan through on goal, but the Armenian striker found Roef on his way. Shortly after that chance De Ketelaere saw his shot take a deflection and go wide. But in the following corner Lang picked out De Ketelaere and he headed in: 1-2.

The last quarter of an hour was intense. Tissoudali had a second goal chalked off because the ball had crossed the backline and Club went out in search of the equalizer. But the blue and black didn't create a single clear-cut chance. A header by De Ketelaere went over the crossbar and on the other side of the pitch Mignolet parried away Malede's shot.

No more goals, but two red cards in the closing seconds of the match. Nicolas Lafore sent Balanta off with a second yellow and in the following commotion Lang was sent off as well with a straight red. Club is now twelve points behind league leaders Union.
