Club suffers 1-2 defeat at the hands of Mouscron
With a home defeat against Mouscron, Club ended the regular league on a bad note. The visitors took the lead thirty minutes into the game through Amallah, only to see Club draw level in the second half. Time was too short, however, for Club to recover from a second visiting goal, this time through Antonov.
No changes to the team that had overcome Eupen so perfectly last week. An intense study round for both outfits kept the crowd at Jan Breydel bereft of clear danger. Schrijvers tried his luck from afar, but his shot sailed over. Moments later, the striker seemed goalbound, set up by Vanaken and neatly taking the ball in his stride, but goalie Butez got a foot to the ball to deny the opener.
On the other side of the pitch, the first real threat proved more successful. Some fine passing put through Benson on the left wing, singling out Selim Amallah to easily tuck in the 0-1. A setback for Club, trying to pile on the pressure. Mouscron's organisation remained tight, however, neutralising all wing play. A 0-1 at half-time gave Blauw-Zwart some head ache.
A fiery Club started out strong in the second half, immediately looking for that early equaliser. A header by Diatta was pawed away by Butez, while Vanaken's shot went over. Club kept mounting the pressure, creating plenty of chances, seeing Mouscron defender Vojvoda clear a ball from the line on two occasions. A hard shot by Schrijvers was also saved by goalie Butez, and Dennis, left all alone, headed over moments later.
Keeping up this excruciating pace was hardly possible, and Mouscron managed to restore the balance, putting Horvath to work to deny Awoniyi's effort. Another Club chance went missing as Dennis headed straight into the eager hands of Butez. Frustrating play, but the well-deserved equaliser finally came. Wesley brought the ball in front of goal, where Butez slid the ball into the feet of Schrijvers to tap in the 1-1.
The goal revived Club's hopes on a win, but the situation remained precarious as Mouscron was looking to score on the break. Horvath first saved a neatly placed ball by Benson, but a bit later Antonov cruelly put the 1-2 past Club's American goalie with an absolute stunner of a goal. Hans Vanaken had the chance to make it 2-2 on the night, but once again Butez saved the day. Unable to add another one to the tally, Club ends the regular league on a false note.
