Club take one point home from Genk
Club Brugge have drawn 1-1 with Racing Genk. The blue and black conceded an early goal when Ndongala stabbed home from close range for the hosts, but Siebe Schrijvers deservedly equalised shortly after half-time.
Ivan Leko made no changes to the team that had beaten KV Oostende on Tuesday, with Ethan Horvath in goal again and Mats Rits kept his position in the starting eleven. Both sides started off lively with offensive play in the opening minutes. Diatta's cross was cleared by the Genk defence and Ndongala fired into the arms of Horvath - a comfortable save for the American.
Ten minutes into the game Genk opened the scoring when Samatta played the ball into the path of Pozuelo who then coolly feeded Ndongala at the far post to slot home from close range: 1-0.
An early setback for Club who then started to take over control of the match when Leko pulled Schrijvers back to create a majority in midfield. After fifteen minutes play it was Schrijvers who tried his luck from range against his former club, but the ball flew wide.
A few minutes later Mata's shot went wide as well and Rits saw his volley loop over the crossbar.
The blue and black put more pressure on the home side, but Genk were well-organised. When Rits was found unmarked at the far post he whipped in a cross but Genk goalkeeper Vukovic palmed it away.
Club upped its tempo, but couldn't create clear-cut chances. Nakamba dragged his long-range finish wide and Schrijvers' free-kick was headed away before it could become dangerous.
After the break Club looked even more eager to level the score, but the attempts by Schrijvers and Rits didn't result in a goal. But ten minutes into the second half Siebe Schrijvers converted a brilliant attacking play. Wesley played the ball back to Schrijvers who put the ball past Vukovic with a great low drive into the corner.
The goal liberated Club who almost immediately came in front but Wesley headed Diatta's fine cross wide.
The leveler and Wesley's missed header was the sign for Genk to regroup, but apart from a Pozuelo free-kick Club remained the more dangerous side. Schrijvers and Diatta scuffed their finish wide while Aidoo headed Rits' cross against his own crossbar to prevent Wesley from tapping in.
But Club still had to be careful in the back while trying to score a second goal. Samatta aimed his curling effort centimeters wide and Mechele cleared on the line after a fantastic reflex save by Horvath on a shot by Heynen.
Going into the final fifteen minutes of the game, the tempo dropped a bit, but it was still exciting as both sides tried to claim the win. Poulain headed Vormer's cross wide and Vukovic was forced into making a save by Rits. Genk had one last good chances as well but Samatta couldn't hit the target.
The score remained 1-1, the spoils were shared. Genk are still top of the league, Club second and trailing by three points.
