THE ENCOUNTER

The teams will meet for the 83rd time in the Belgian top flight, but the last encounter dates well back to 49 years ago (1972), in a time when there was still no talk of the Jan Breydel Stadium or Olympia, Club playing its home fixtures at De Klokke Stadium. In 40 home games, Club won 21 (its last victory back then in 1972: 3-0), 7 draws (last time in 1963, 1-1) and 12 defeats (the last time Union won was in 1960, 1-2).

Club did meet with Union at the occasion of the Belgian Cup, beating them 2-0 in the Round of 32. Club has not known defeat in eight consecutive games  (from 1961 to 1973). On Match Day 2, a great long distance shot by Sobol made it a 0-1 victory for Club at the Duden Parc Stadium earlier this year.

Club now has two top strikers, with Charles De Ketelaere being joined by Bas Dost at the top of the list, both having scored ten times. Club's assist king is still Noa Lang with ten goals served on a plate. Club has been unbowed in 11 consecutive home games (won 6, drew 5).

Jack Hendry's expulsion at Standard earned him a one-day suspension, making him miss out on this encounter. No Tajon Buchanan either, playing WC qualifiers with his Canada, making him unavailable for four games. In order not to miss the game at KV Kortrijk, Clinton Mata and Éder Balanta should avoid another booking.

THE OPPONENT

The Brussels team is the country's proud leader, a nine point gap with Club 23 match days down the track. Union has scored the most goals (56), conceded the least (21), has the most clean sheets (10) and won the most games (17) of all Pro League teams, making them the well-deserved league leaders.

Top scorers Deniz Undav (17 goals) and Dante Vanzeir (14 goals) only see Antwerp forward Michael Frey (18 goals) higher than them in the top scorer's table. German striker Undav also holds the assist record at Union (9). So far, he had 97 attempts at goal in the Jupiler Pro League, more than any other player in the league.

Union has now won seven times in a row away from home. A win at Jan Breydel would equal Club Brugge's record of eight consecutive away wins. Anderlecht is the only team to do better, with a string of wins ending after 11. Coach Felice Mazzu's outfit has a fine away run, with 28 out of 33, among others beating Anderlecht (1-3), Beerschot VA (0-3), Cercle Brugge (0-3), KAS Eupen (2-3), KAA Gent (0-2), KV Oostende (1-7), STVV (1-2), Zulte Waregem (0-2) and Seraing (0-4), and drawing at KRC Genk (1-1).  KV Mechelen has been the only team so far to keep the points at home against Union (3-1).

The winter transfer window saw Union bid farewell to Felipe Avenatti (Uru), out on loan from Standard to Beerschot now. The club had three signings: Polish midfielder Kacper Kozlowski [on loan from Brighton (Eng)], Japanese defender Koki Mahcida [on loan from Kashima Antlers (Jpn)] and Spanish midfielder Cameron Puertas [from Lausanne Sport (Sui)]

Quite a hefty month for Union, with only top teams to beat. The team had a terrific start, however, beating KRC Genk at home (2-1). In the weeks to come, a home game against city rivals Anderlecht follows, and an away game at Antwerp.
