Defeat at Sclessin

After the stunning 0-4 win against Porto in the Champions League, Blauw-Zwart quickly had to focus on the top game in Liege on Sunday evening. But a brace by Zickernagel and a late goal by Balikwisha meant that Club returned home empty-handed.

Unlike the match at the Estadio do Dragao, Carl Hoefkens opted for Roman Yaremchuk for the striker position. Ferran Jutglà started on the bench and got some extra rest. The ten other names were unchanged.

The home fans immediately created a spirited atmosphere with several tifos, but it was Club that took control of the game in the early stages. A good pass from Skov Olsen towards Yaremchuk was passed by the Ukrainian into the feet of Sowah, but his cross was intercepted by Bodart.

After 12 minutes, Balikwisha was able to score for the home side in the far corner, but the linesman had his flag up. Standard now decided the pace of the game and created a flurry of chances. First Dewaele's cross blew over, then it was Amallah who was able to find Zinckernagel. His shot was blocked, Dragus was able to pick up, turn and shoot, but his shot went wide as well.

Club responded via Vanaken and Skov Olsen. The latter tried to latch onto the captain's through ball, but Bodart had rushed out to collect the ball. Halfway the first half the goalkeeper released Amallah, but his long-range strike sailed wide of the target.

The hosts opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Zickernagel created space for himself and curled the ball against the back of the net. On the other side of the pitch Vanaken recoverd the ball in midfield and played into the path of Nielsen, who then feeded the ball to Yaremchuk. The forward went past his defender, but his strike went wide.

Zinckernagel again

It was a better Club Brugge at the start of the second half with a strike from Nielsen that went against the arm of Dussenne. Jasper Vergoote pointed to the spot, but he overturned his decision following a VAR intervention.

Coach Carl Hoefkens brought on Jutglà for Yaremchuk, while Skov Olsen kept crossing the ball in front of goal. But Vanaken had to get down too much to get the ball on goal and a few minutes later Meijer mistimed his header.

With thirty minutes on the clock Standard doubled their lead when Zickernagel flashed past Sylla and Mechele to put his second of the evening past Mignolet. Club couldn't put their foot next to the hosts's apart from a couple of crosses by Skov Olsen and a header by Vanaken. Balikwisha even made it three for the home side in the dying seconds of the match.

Blauw-Zwart enters the international break with a defeat. On Saturday 1 October, KV Mechelen awaits at home.
