Ivan Leko: “This draw is another historic result”
Switching his usual 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2, and lining up Sofyan Amrabat as extra pawn in midfield, Ivan Leko surprised Dortmund. A solid defensive organisation helped Club to a deserved 0-0 draw.
“A result is what we hoped for here, but what I saw with regards to focus and belief was outstanding. A great big well done to our players. They hardly gave any chances away, so that's really good. We knew it was going to be hard getting possession here, which is why we opted for a reinforced midfield. Maybe we could have shown a bit more on the break, but to be grabbing a point here is another historic result in the Champions League. It's a dream that has become reality. The draw means so much for Club Brugge's image and that of Belgian football in general.”
A four man defense, that was a thing of the past it seemed, but the choice paid off in spades. “At training, we practiced a four man defense. It wasn't easy, but it's great to see we managed to switch tactically. We showed we don't always have to play a romantic type of football, but that we can also play to get that result if need be. That can be work wonders in the future. Our goal was to claim third place, which wasn't all that easy in what is a strong group. We reached our goal, and that's a feat. We now have one more goal in our home game against Atlético Madrid: get a result with some fine football.”
A second start for Sofyan Amrabat, who put in a solid performance in midfield. "Sofyan was one of the best today, I reckon. A positive gangster on the pitch. He had already featured in last season's Champions League with Feyenoord, and showed he is capable of playing at that level. Today he demonstrated just why we believe in him. He has been working very hard, and deserved this shot. It's now up to him to keep bringing it and continue this form.” (SF)
