Ivan Leko: “Best Club Brugge of the past few months”
The neat home win over Standard clearly pleased a satisfied Ivan Leko. Club followed its draw at Dortmund well.
“The best Club Brugge of the past few months”, Leko beamed. “What's most important is that the players have faith in our way of playing. Some might say that Standard had an off-day, but those who saw the game vs Sevilla know that this team is in great form. Today, Club was top from the go, showing everything that's crucial in the world of modern football: focus, concentration and team spirit.”
The heat was on for Club after last week's upset defeat against Zulte Waregem. “An ultra vital week for us indeed. Losing at Dortmund is common sense, but still: we made the trip there with the will to get a fine result. If you just take a look at the difference in quality, it is fantastic to be getting that point. But today's game came with mounds of pressure. You know 6 out of 21 is not enough for a top team, and that's just when you host the game against a Standard in solid form. Losing this game would mean it's a crisis here. You can either be scared, or try to find solutions. We absolutely wanted that second scenario, and that paid off in spades. We had only little time to train for the game against Dortmund, but we still managed to play in a different way. There's a better balance in the team. We could have opened up entirely today and lost 2-4. But we played a very focused game, ending in a deserved win. This way of playing leaves us options to also make it in the play-offs.”
Only downside to what was a perfect afternoon was the injuries of Dennis and Mata. “They both left the pitch injured, and it doesn't look like we will be able to call upon them on Friday at Waasland-Beveren. So again we will not have any wingers, and that's a pity. Without speed and explosiveness, it's hard to break through. We can now start finding excuses, but it will be important to reach for the solutions come the next game.” (SF)
