Ivan Leko: “Worst performance of the season”
A first home defeat for Ivan Leko's troops. The Croat looked for answers and had no trouble admitting defeat.
“Congratulations to Zulte Waregem, which came here with a plan: compact and swift in the turnaround. It's hard to find an explanation to what happened today. This was our worst performance so far. We were in control initially, but after that spot kick, I felt like we wanted to find a solution to quickly. To boot, frustration grew after that 0-2. By the end, we tried forcing things with power play, but unsuccessfully. A well-deserved win for Zulte Waregem.”
The report after this defeat shows a meagre 6 out of 21. "For the third time running we have trouble getting into our rhythm after an international break. We now need to be critical as to our own performance and try and find solutinos for the next game. Was it due to a lack of wingers, or because we tried different tactics? That's always possible, but when you have been playing in a certain style for seventeen months, it's not all that easy to try a different tack. It is possible to win games without wingers, so there's no use in hiding behind that excuse. Our selection is broad, and we harbour a lot of quality.”
The defeat came as a major disappointment to Leko. “Losing is always painful, losing at home is extra painful, and when you deserve to lose, it's even worse. It's hard ot explain this, as our will to win at training was great. We now need to go back to the basics, and keep working hard with lots of self-confidence and a positive attitude. We are not as bad as it may seem today, while we weren't as good as it seemed either after those 0-4 wins at Gent and Monaco. The truth lies somewhere in between.” (SF)
