With six out of six against OH Leuven and KV Kortrijk, coach Carl Hoefkens didn't see any reason to tinker with his line-up. New signing Boyata, who put pen to paper earlier this week, was on the bench.
For the home side Mbenza was in the starting eleven for the first time, forcing Gholizadeh on the bench.
It was a slow, cautious start of the game from both sides. Both Sowah, for Club, and Tchatchoua, for Charleroi, tried to open the scoring early on but both players didn't connect properly with the ball. But then, in the nineth minute of the game, Mbenza powered through and whipped in a cross in front of goal. Mignolet palmed it away, but unluckily into the feet of Morioka, who steered the ball against the back of the net.
Club responded immediately through Skov Olsen, but his effort from a tight angle was stopped by Koffi. For the hosts the pacy Mbenza was still the most dangerous man. In a sprint with Mata he was a tad quicker on the ball, but he was too much under pressure to get his shot right. The game went back and forth with threats from both sides. Kayembe tried it from an acute angle, but that didn't worry Mignolet.
On the other side of the pitch, Nielsen's try was far better. But goalkeeper Koffi did excellent to tip away the curling long-range effort. But it did prove to be the prelude of club's offensive aspirations. Just a few minutes later Skov Olsen teed up Vanaken, who slammed the ball against the underside of the bar.
Club upped the pressure and just past the half-hour mark Club got the equaliser when Vanaken found Jutglà inside the penalty area and the Spaniard stabbed home. Less than five minutes later the blue and black were on the front foot - again Jutglà. This time he drilled it in with a left-footed strike from just outside the penalty area. What a goal!
Club headed towards the dressing room with a 1-2 advantage, despite late efforts from Skov Olsen and Sowah.
Charleroi were keen on restoring the balance quickly in the second half. Heymans' first attempt flew high over the crossbar, but he was very close in the 53rd minute when he was the final pawn of a smooth attacking move and blasted the ball against the post. Minutes later Gholizadeh curled it just wide of the far post.
Charleroi had the chances, but it was Club that scored on the break. Skov Olsen to Nielsen and the Dane found the bottom corner with a low strike from the edge of the area. Club was in the drivers' seat now. Gholizadeh tried to get his side back into the game, but he skied his long-range strike.
Club controlled the game and there were barely any chances from either team. Ten minutes before the end Boyata made his debut for Club. Charleroi, who scored half of their goals in the last quarter of an hour, almost pulled one back when a cross reached Mbenza at the far post, but Mignolet did great to keep out the effort with a solid foot reflex.
In the closing minutes of the match Club had a good chance to make it four when substitute Larin was through on goal, but he took just too much time and the chance was gone.
A few minutes later Sylla did ripple the net, but his goal was rightfully disallowed as he had strayed offside. And so Club Brugge takes three important points. Next week it's the city derby against Cercle.
