Last-gasp goal puts Club past Lokeren

In a night to remember, Club managed to overturn the crooked situation it set out in the first half against Lokeren. It was only in the very last minute of the game that Club managed to undo Jovanovic' opener after goals by Poulain and Vossen.

Two personnel changes in coach Ivan Leko's outfit, Brandon Mechele and Krépin Diatta reclaiming their spots in defense. The double change couldn't keep Lokeren from scoring from their first opportunity of the game, however. Serbian striker Jovanovic was left all alone by the far post to tap in the opener. Club's game was not up to par, and the team had lots of difficulty creating chances.

Lokeren on the other hand kept on insisting, and hit the post twice through an industrious Jovanovic. In between both efforts, Blauw-Zwart had one good chance: Rits teed up Ruud Vormer, who saw his shot cleared into corner kick by goalie De Wolf. The best chance to draw level came just before half time: Wesley saw his effort parried by the Lokeren goalie, who was again called into action as Danjuma tried again in the rebound.

Club had difficulty making its way into the game after the break too. And when Wesley finally seemed to be equalising, the VAR recalled the ref seeing an alleged foul just before going for goal. A bit later, however, the score was level: Ruud Vormer's corner kick was met with Benoît Poulain, firmly heading in the equaliser. Club now piled on the pressure, looking for the winner. Vanaken, cutting inside had a stroke of magic in mind as his shot from outside the box went for the top right hand corner, but met with the crossbar.

In its final rush for gold, Club kept pushing on, resulting in more slight chances. Mechele's header was cleared just below the crossbar, while Openda saw his shot cleared by the Lokeren defense. Vlietinck missed after a quick free kick set him up, and in the rebound Denswil fired just wide. Poulain's header was a bit too meek to truly unsettle the goalie.

Just when the audience at Jan Breydel settled for the one point, it watched as Openda was brought down inside the box. Ref Dierick consulted the VAR, but the decision to award a spot kick stuck. Vossen headed for the spot, and claimed his fourth goal of the season. A very narrow win, after going through a tight spot. The three points stay at Jan Breydel, and Club can take on next Tuesday's CL opener against Borussia Dortmund with a confident albeit cautioned mind.
