Philippe Clement: “Happy to see that resilience in my team”

Plenty of positive sides to the Kiev game, one of which the mental resilience after a setback. A contented coach Philippe Clement praised his group's mentality.

“The scenario wasn't working for us: we conceded an early goal, suffered a disputable red card, and scored an own-goal. We were in charge of the game, with 58% ball possession. Even Dynamo Kiev's president congratulated us, saying we played better football than his team. Still, we had to fight until the very last second to make sure it went our way. I'm really happy with the resilience the group showed; that's something we can take to the future. Our players didn't falter, even when things didn't go our way. If we keep fighting like that, things will work out in our favour too in the future. If you keep going, even when the going gets tough, you stand a much better chance to overturn the game. Today the group showed they are capable of doing so, and that's a huge step forward.”

A great result taking us to the next round, but no reason to start partying just yet. "No excessive partying in the dressing rooms, no, as there's another game on Friday against Eupen. It was a taxing game, claiming a lot of my players, and we're already working towards recovering for Friday's game. After that, two tough games against LASK Linz await in the Champions League play-offs. It will take an A-class Club Brugge, but let's just enjoy this game today. Then it's Eupen, as the championship remains very important to us, and after that we can take up our Champions League dreams and aspirations again.” (VM)
