Philippe Clement: “Need to boost our efficiency”

The three points clearly pleased Philippe Clement, but he still reckoned there's room for improvement as the efficiency Club showed against Zulte Waregem last weekend was now lacking.

“First of all, that kick-off with Miguel Van Damme was every bit emotional. It's in moments like this that we forget about the competition between Club and Cercle. As to our first half, we really should have scored more goals. It really should have been more than just that 1-0 at half-time. After that we had a bad start as we entered the second half, conceding that goal within the very first minute. We were to blame because of the way we defended at that moment, but also Cercle played it out really well. After that, my team was just too nervous. Too little quality in possession. Our last half an hour was much better. Chances started rolling in, but we just failed to score that third. Things remain tight, as one counter can make you lose out on two points. That's annoying. We need to boost our efficiencey. Last week, we were great in this respect, but today we weren't. That's all part of football, and it won't be like that every week. We need to kill the game earlier on, it's really vital.”

A hard-fought win for Club in this derby. “Kudos to Cercle. I've seen their six games, they play some fine football. They will never get into trouble this season. And they will give many a team a handful. You can clearly see the hand of the coach in that team, the way he wants to play. They deliver well, and they have some quality players. This has been the best Cercle outfit I've seen in a very long time. It goes to show how we had to fight to get those three points.” (KN)
