Philippe Clement: “Not calm enough"

Philippe Clement saw his team had a hard job to keep the three points home. Club stay top of the ranking and can travel to Dortmund with confidence.

“It was not a top game but we deserved the victory, especially based on our possession of the ball and the number of chances. We started well and pushed Kortrijk away. Unfortunately, that only lasted for more or less ten minutes. Afterwards, we did not move enough in the front and consequently we could not dismantle the strong organization of Kortrijk. We missed someone in the box in order to be more dangerous with some moving players around. That improved when Krmenčík appeared on the field. There was more a battle then and we also scored which was the most difficult thing we had to do this evening. Unfortunately, we were not calm enough. We have to talk about that tomorrow. I think my players thought too much about the match against Mechelen where we gave the victory away at the end. Therefore, they did not make enough use of the space.”

The Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund has place this Tuesday but the coach of the Blues thought this didn't have an impact. "I don't think the players were already thinking about Dortmund. We were just not calm enough when possessing the ball. We could have done better and have to take this knowledge with us for the next couple of weeks. The good thing is that we won for the first time at home without fans in the stadium and we kept a clean sheet.”

Haaland seems ready for the match against Club. The attacker of Dortmund scored four goals against Hertha BSC. "We are not yet at the level of Haaland in front. We will work hard with our players but we are ranked first and scored quite a lot already this season. It is not that bad but it has to be fun to have a player like Haaland in your team. Or a player like lukaku in his current condition. You are already standing far when you create a good organization around such striker. We will fight on Tuesday. The result of the home game against Borussia was a disappointment but we played well."

Finally, Clement praised Charles De Ketelaere and Noa Lang. “Charles did a great job on the left. Because of the absence of Sobol and Ricca, he played on a completely new position. He only trained once on that position but you could not notice that at all. It is not easy to play there as an attacking player but he did a great job. He was physically impressive. Noa Lang on the other hand is everywhere on the field. Within our way of playing, he can be dangerous with one individual action. A player like him is very important against opponents that adapt their style according to yours. He hardly played at Ajax which is the reason why he misses the physical basis and match rhythm but he is growing every week." (SF)
