Reactions after Club Brugge - AA Gent

After the goalless draw against AA Gent, we had a talk with Adu, De Bock, Hoefkens, Kujovic, Stenman and Garrido.

Carl HOEFKENS

“Didn't work out the way we planned“

Club got stuck at 0-0 against AA Gent, so Carl Hoefkes had no reason to be happy with the result: "It indeed didn't exactly go the way we had planned. In possession we weren't good enough to cause a breakthrough. Kudos to Gent too, which clearly had worked it out well, and formed a very firm block. Our pace was just too slow, which made it hard on us to find openings against this Gent, clearly not where they belong on the table. It didn't come as a surprise to me that they performed so well today, they do have a solid outfit. Nevertheless, we showed enough fighting spirit and commitment, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to keep the points at Jan Breydel. The last thing we should do know, is panick. We should calmly assess this game, and see where there's still work to do. What, and how? I prefer keeping that in our mids. You should also take into account that this is their 3rd game after the Winter Break, and our first. It shouldn't come as an excuse, though, but it could be a first explanation. A second could be that we need to fit in a number of new guys, which doens't make it that easy. Adu has only been here for two days, and was immediately dropped into the team. You know that automatisms are not exactly in the cards then. Still, he showed some good stuff, and I know that in time he will be a worthy follow-up to Niki (Zimling, evit). (MV)

Vladan KUJOVIC

“Shouldn't doubt our qualities”

Goalie Vladan Kujovic kept a clean sheet, but saw how the build-up was a bit sloppy at times. "We cannot be happy with this result. In the final two home games against Kortrijk and Gent, we only get two points. Ideally, you keep hold of the three points in home games, but in all fairness we didn't deserve the win today. There was no swift build-up or a solid organisation, while Gent was very well-positioned. Not enough movement in our team, but that's also our opponent's merit. Gent stood firm some sixty meters in front of their goal. As a goalie, you need to be focused, and ready when the few chances arrive. You don't see the ball for minutes on end, but all of a sudden you are called into action. My respect to De Bock and Adu; in their first official game, under such pressure: that's not easy. I'm happy the defense was flawless, but there's still a lot of progress to be made as to the level of our game. That's also the difference with friendlies: there's no pressure, and you just play. A league game is a totally different matter, the opponent attacks you in every position. We now shouldn't go doubting ourselves. We lost two points, but we should remain ambitious. The gap is big, but there are still the Play-Offs. I still believe in it, even in the hard times. I try to transpose my positivism to the other players. Next up is Genk away, a totally different game again. Genk plays more open football, and chances are that it will again be an entertaining game like at Standard." (KN)

Fredrik STENMAN

“I can see why the fans are disappointed”

Fredrik Stenman played a decent game in defense. Some Club fans booed after the game, a reaction he can understand. "What can I say, I do understand that our fans did not get the desired result, so I can see why they are disappointed after a 0-0. On the other hand, expectations are clearly skyrocketing, and we can hardly afford another faux-pas. Which does not mean that I think the result is a great one, but I do believe we tried everything we had to win this, but unfortunately it was not to be. Personally, I think it's a disadvantage we didn't play last week, as we were on a high after our winter break. Oh well, no use crying over spilt milk; we now need to perform well at Genk.” (FDC)

Laurens DE BOCK

“Mixed feelings”

Apart from Enock Adu, Laurens De Bock was also new in Club's starting eleven. A somewhat hesitant first quarter was followed up with a great performance. He denied Mboyo as he was through on goal with a perfectly timed tackle. "We misinterpreted that Gent attack at first, but I soon saw that the only way to get that ball from him was with a perfect tackle. I didn't think we performed badly in defense, as Gent really only had one chance. On the other hand, we have to admit that things were tight tactically with our opponent, which stopped us from creating many clear chances ourselves. So it's with mixed feelings that you find me here. We keep a clean sheet, but on the other hand we had hoped for more, just like our fans.” (FDC)

Enock ADU

“I can do a lot better”

Enock Adu started from kick-off only two days after his arrival at the Club, but this didn't keep him from pulling in a great performance. The player himself was only mildly happy about his Club debut. "My first game for my new club was not bad at all, but definitely not massive. I can do a lot better than what I've shown today. We had a few chances throughout the game, but in the end it wasn't enough to deserve the win. At half time, our coach asked me and Victor to help a bit more in offense, to limit the gap between the midfielders and the attackers, but in the end that didn't help that much. I obviously hope I'll be playing again next week, but that all depends on the coach.” (FDC)

Juan Carlos GARRIDO

“Newcomers will become important players”

Juan Carlos Garrido was obviously not happy with the point loss. "This was not a good game. At training, we did well in the past weeks, but that didn't show in today's game. How come? I do not know. Maybe it was too long ago since we last played a league game, but I don't want to go find excuses. Our play was too haphazard, and we didn't succeeded in breaking the Gent deadlock. In the second half, we played a bit higher, and the game was more in balance. But unfortunately, we didn't succeed in scoring.”
In De Bock, Adu and Gudjohnsen, Garrido lined up three debutants. "They are important players to the team, and I want to fit them in as quickly as possible. It's only logical that De Bock and Adu started, with Larsen, Donk, Blondel and Zimling unavailable. De Bock is a great talent, he can play both at left back as in the heart of defense, while Adu is a pure number six, creating balance in the team. As to Gudjohnsen, you just know he's a legend. In due time, and with more games behind them, they will become key players to Club Brugge.” (SF)
