Reactions after Club Brugge - Standard

After the win against Standard de Liège, we approached Refaelov, Ryan, De Sutter, Oulare and coach Preud'homme for a first reaction.

Lior REFAELOV

“Be ready to decide the game at any moment”

Lior Refaelov made sure Club claimed the win, converting two penalties against a sturdy Standard. “I expected today's game to be a tough one. Their early goal allowed them to play from a solid organisation. It will be like this in every game in the Play-Offs, games with not too many chances. You need to be ready to decide the game at any given moment. Our goal was to start with a win today. We scored from two penalties, and could have even added a third goal through Oulare by the end of the game. It's great to have deciding players on the bench. In Oulare and De Sutter, we have two strikers in fine shape.”
The Israeli midfielder reckoned the two penalties were correctly awarded. "That defeneder came in two feet stretched, and he touched me. I feel good enough to be taking the penalties, and Simons handed me the ball and told me to go for it. In that second situation, the player handled the ball with his arm. I didn't doubt whether to take it too, but the goalie was very close now. I was doubting on which corner to pick, but in the end I went for the left hand side again. I also want to indicate that I respect the ref's decision not to blow the whistle on two other occasions to leave the advantage to me and keep the game going.”
A fierce fight awaits in Play-off 1. “All six teams have their qualities. As a team, you shouldn't be afraid to fall back and just fire it away, not even in a home game. A title will be won with a good attack and with a good defense. I'm 29 this year, and have lots of experience. This is the time to be writing history with Club Brugge.” (KN)

Mathew RYAN

“Trebel beat me to the ball by a fraction of a second”

Blauw-Zwart really started the opening game with a 0-1; two minutes on the clock, the board showed 0-1, after visitor Trebel put the ball past Ryan in two goes. The goal turned out to be a setback with its effect for the rest of the first half. “I went for the ball, just like Trebel, but unfortunately he beat me to the ball by a fraciton of a second, allowing him to tuck it in. An error on my behalf, or the result of a minor hesitation, the facts are that we were 0-1 behind straight away, and were forced to go full force right from the start. Needless to say that we were thrilled to come out victorious anyway, it was so important to win this first one. It goes to show that we have a great mentality, coming 0-1 behind and still winning. Not the first time this season either. That's thé main difference with last season. We believe in ourselves, and we really have won confidence in that respect. I don't know whether it'll be enough to win the championship, but it definitely will play its part. It was great to see Refaelov taking up his responsibility without a moment's hesitation; it shows just how confident he is. Once again, just like in the Cup Final, he won it for us, and that doesn't only boost his confidence, but the entire team's.” (FDC)

Tom DE SUTTER

“Showcased our resilience”

Tom De Sutter saw how Club started out meekly, but also witnessed how the team went over STandard in a better second half. "We took a bad start; Standard started from a solid organisation, but once again we showcased our resilience, turning a 0-1 into a 2-1 win. It wasn't the best of games, but mentally we are in great shape. We had trouble getting to our regular rhythm after about two weeks without playing. The coach expected a reaction after our faulty start. By the end of the first half it got better, and in the second half we showed we really wanted to win. This win is primordial. A game with a lot of fouls, and a huge intensity, characteristic for the play-offs. I reckon the two penalties wre correctly rewarded. I had a hard time, though, playing on an island at first. I grant you that that yellow card I was shown was correct.” (KN)

Obbi OULARE

“Won with character”

Halfway through the second half, Obbi Oulare came in and set up the attack that spurred the second penalty kick. His action on the right was put to a halt by Andrade handling the ball: penalty, and 2-1 for Club. The forward analysed the game. “This definitely wasn't our best game. But as we showed character, we managed to win despite the 0-1. And that's great for our confidence. As to that second penalty, I knew straight away he had handled the ball. It wasn't on purpose, okay, but the ref had no other option than to award a spot kick. Just before full time, I thought the 3-1 was mine, but the ball ended up on the wrong side of the post. I was quite happy with the way I came on, even if I lost possession a couple of times. I still need to work hard in that respect. Teaming up with Tom (De Sutter, edit) is running better and better. The idea is to try and win heading duels each in our turn, and that worked out fine. It was crucial to win our opening game in Play-off 1, so we can travel to Kortrijk in full confidence on Saturday.” (FDC)

Michel PREUD’HOMME

“Good lesson”

A hard-fought win vs Standard de Liège. Michel Preud’homme saw some working points. “We were not ready at the start of the game, started out meekly and conceded a goal straight away. In that situation, each compartment of our team erred. Apparently we forgot that you need to extremely focused in the play-offs, in particular in the opening game. It took some time to find our way into the game; our opponent put up a good organisation, and they have a couple of lethal players. Our mentality and dueling rose, and we tried finding solutions, even missing out on a couple of players. A midfield with Vormer, Simons and Claudemir is not the ideal solution, and today's game was a good example. In the second half, we switched to two men up front, which paid off straight away. This is a valuable lesson to take with us. Despite a weaker performance, we managed to grab the three points.”
After his deciding goal in the Cup Final, Lior Refaelov once again forced the break-through. "We have a number of players who can take up the gauntlet, and Refaelov is one of them. When it comes to penalties, Timmy decides on who takes them. This way, there will be no argument. Refaelov and Izquierdo had trouble getting into the game. After the 1-1, there was more pressing, which meant a world of difference.”
Victor Vazquez manning the pitch again after just a handful of training sessions: that was quite a surprise. “Victor had been training well, so I asked the physio whether I could select him for the game. That way we were able to make use of his skills in the last ten to fifteen minutes, which we did. He will most likely also be selectable for Kortrijk. Whether he'll start is something I still need to figure out. Gedoz is another story altogether: he's suffering from pubalgy. We will be allowing him some rest, and then he can join at training every other day. I thought he was doing well at training, but then he said he was suffering too much still. Unfortunately it will be like that until the end of the season. We won't be seeing a fully fit Gedoz this season.” (SF)
