Sander COOPMAN

“Standard more feisty”

In his maiden game in Club's Starting XI, Sander Coopman started on the right wing against Standard de Liège, but the midfielder was unable to cause a dent. “The start of the game was tough. Once again we conceded a goal, and this time we weren't able to come back. Standard was very eager, and we had no reply to that. They overpowered us. We hardly created any danger, even if Refaelov had that super chance at the start of the game. A goal could have turned the game around. In the second half, we created a bit more space, also because Standard seemed a bit tired. Right now, we are just missing too many injured players. At the start, we had the perfect mix of experienced players and youngsters, but in the past couple of weeks we have been counting on our youngsters more often. When Standard pushed through, you could see that we had difficulty tackling them, maybe also due to our lack of freshness.”
The offensive midfielder also offered his views on the games to come. "A win for Gent tomorrow means we are no longer independent, and that's a shame. As to Anderlecht, they will have to win next week, but we also should go for the win.”
Coopman also reflected upon his first Starting appearance in the Jupiler Pro League. “I knew I was going to play in te later afternoon. During our meeting, my name appeared on the screen. That came as quite the surprise.” (MDK)

Mathew RYAN

“One week of mental and physical recovery”

Mathew Ryan was unable to keep Standard from scoring early in the game. The Aussie also noticed how Club had trouble reaching its usual level and was powerless to fight back. "You just knew that the day would come when we would be unable to come back after a goal. It just wasn't supposed to be today. We had a couple of chances, but were unable to make the most of them. We didn't win, so it wasn't good enough today. We just didn't create enough chances to earn anything more. But no use crying over spilt milk. We now have a full week to clear our heads and prepare for the Anderlecht game as good as we can. We will try to recover both mentally and phsyically. And try to earn a result there. We just need to get back to our winning ways. It has been a long season, but we just have to keep giving everything. There's a championship we can win. This has been a very important season for me, with lots of chances to gain experience.” (MDK)

Victor VAZQUEZ

“Standard was the better team”

Coming in for Lior Refaelov after sixty minutes, Victor Vazquez was also unable to turn the tide. "It's always hard to come back in a game, but Standard was also just better and sharper than we were. We also have the quality to create chances, but today it didn't work out. Standard knew that it was game over for them if they didn't win, so it was like a Final to them. We also wanted to stay on top, but it just wasn't to be. It's clear that we're disappointed, but that's football. We just need to accept this defeat as they were better than we were. We had some fine chances at the start of the game, but unfortunately their first chance was a goal. Standard stayed well organised, keeping us from creating too many chances. We tried fighting back, but when you always concede openers, it's bound to go wrong some day.”
The Spaniard also reflected upon the games to come. "The fixtures are as they are, nothing you can do about it. If we win our next four games, we're champions, simple as that. We'll see what the results are in tomorrow's games, but we clearly need to have faith in ourselves, especially with the season we've played so far. As of now, every game sis a Final. When you play 60 games, it's obvious that there's also fatigue, both mentally and physically. Right now we just need to be fully focused from the first minute.”
Victor also brushed upon his slight injury. “I only missed one week, so I can pick up where I left easily. I feel fit, I feel 100 per cent, the coach wouldn't have selected me if things were any different.” (MDK)

Brandon MECHELE

“Fair game from now on”

The battles with Igor De Camargo were fierce at times, but Brandon Mechele was also unable to keep Standard from pulling the longest straw. "We really need to find a solution to those early goals. For the sixth time in a row, we concede the opener. Trailing so early in the game away from home, it makes it all the more difficult. Things aren't going fluently for us of late. In the other games, we were able to fight back with our dueling, but today we didn't have that weapon either. We have more trouble creating chances too, but the lack of freshness shouldn't come as an excuse. We've been performing not that well, and I reckon that's not only because we are tired. It makes it harder on us, though, as we only had a couple of days to prepare for the next game. Right now, however, we all fight with the same weapons. We now have one week to prepare for the all important game at Anderlecht.” (MDK)

Michel PREUD’HOMME

“Defeated by Standard's performance and our lack of freshness”

Michel Preud’homme was witness to how his team was unable to come back from an early goal. "We were off to a good start for once. Izquierdo's shot went just wide, and a bit later a textbook situation should hav lead to a goal. That start should give us confidence, but after that Standard geared up. When you play at that level, with power and speed, any team is bound to have a rough day at Sclessin. You really need to bring your A game to beat them. Their four offensive pawns reached a high level. When you're not fresh, you just don't stand a chance here. We all know our predicament: many injured and a very heavy programme. We played on Wendesday, and again today, both times against a team that had had one day's more rest. We tried to come back once again, but it didn't work out this time. I see two reasons for that: Standard's performance and the lack of freshness in our ranks. Refaelov had lots of difficulty, while Izquierdo started out well but also fell back. The weight of our attack fell upon the shoulders of young Coopman. He played a very good game, but we shouldn't expect him to decide a game all by himself.”
For the first time in a long while, Club will not be playing a midweek game, so Club has all week to get ready for the game at Anderlecht on Sunday. “Vazquez played for half an hour, that's positive. Let's hope that Meunier, Gedoz and Bolingoli also return, even if it has been since the Cup Final since Meunier and Gedoz last played. They will be missing out on match rhythm. My players now get two days off, to help them clear the cob webs a bit.” (SF)
