A second Golden Boot for Hans Vanaken!

History written! Hans Vanaken is only the first player since Jan Ceulemans back in 1986 to in two consecutive Golden Boots. Another first is that one of Club Brugge's finest brings the Golden Boot to Bruges four times in a row. With his excellent performances in both the home league and on the European stage, Vanaken confirmed his great form, and we are sure there's room for more in his prize cabinet.

A 19 point gap separated Vanaken on the top of the ranking with contender Dieumerci Mbokani. Other Club players also feature in the top ten: Simon Mignolet (6) and Ruud Vormer (9).

In 2019, Hans Vanaken made his way to the back of the nets twenty times, delivering 7 assists. He further grew in his role as attacking midfielder doing what the team needs. In 2018, assists were his main weapon, but he added goals to the tally to make it an even more impressive 2019. It also brought him the Pro player of the Year award, and a first starting spot with the Red Devils.

Congrats, Hans!

The results:

1) Hans Vanaken - 322 points
2) Dieumerci Mbokani - 303 points
3) Ruslan Malinovskyi - 220 points

“Dit betekent niet dat ik zal veranderen”

Not one to start drifting, Hans Vanaken remained level-headed after all the praise. “I had a feeling it was going to be a more tight race than last season. But to be winning the Golden Boot again is a magnificent feeling. It's one of the biggest prizes possible. Confirmation is not always that easy having won the Golden Boot, as expectations rise significantly. But I'm happy to have been able to maintain those performances. We have been unable to win silverware with Club Brugge in 2019, but we did have some great moments. Qualifying for the Champions League Group Stages was surely our biggest accomplishment, and the 2-2 draw at Real Madrid was simply unforgettable. It is clear that Club has taken some huge steps. The fact that a new stadium is on the table now, just shows that Club Brugge is still on the grow.”

Following in the footsteps of Wilfried Van Moer, Paul Van Himst and Jan Ceulemans, Hans Vanaken is only the fourth player to win the Golden Boot twice on end. “It's a pity I haven't seen any of them in action. I am very proud, however, to be among that select band of big names in Belgian football, even if this doesn't mean anything big will happen. I'll just keep on trying to reproduce these performances. This is not where it stops, and I'll do my darndest to be here again next year.”

Other than the two Golden Boots, Vanaken was also chosen as Belgium's Pro Player of the Year, and this also for two consecutive years. This doesn't mean, however, that the midfielder is not hungry for more. “It's clear that we at Club Brugge want to win the league, and preferably also the Cup, and try to get as far as we can in the Europa League. Other than that, I hope I can get selected for Euro 2020.”

The win doesn't mean some heavy partying awaits. “I'll be doing some interviews tonight, and after that I'll just be enjoying the moment, together with my wife and family. Training has been postponed to the afternoon, so there'll be some time to enjoy tomorrow too. But after that it's full focus on next Sunday's game at Anderlecht.”

Club's newest Golden Boot concluded his talk with some words of praise for people dear to him. “First and foremost I'd like to thank my wife Lauren for being there for me on a daily basis. My parents too; they did everything for me from when I was a small lad, helping me to get better. And of course my Club and my team mates; without them, I wouldn't have been here.” (SF)
