Victories for PSG and Man City, RB Leipzig suffers defeat

Suffering a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Leverkusen, RB Leipzig have been unable to follow-up on their great Champions League performance in Bruges. Unlike PSG and Man City, who both manaaged to win their home league encounters.

Saint-Etienne – PSG 1-3

An away game at Saint-Etienne was to be Sergio Ramos maiden game for les Parisiens. Point loss seemed inevitable for a big part of the game, but in the final fifteen minutes of the game, Marquinhos and Di Maria took the three points to Paris.

An outstanding Saint-Etienne put in a great first half performance, even if the VAR was in their favour six minutes into the game in denying Neymar's opener. The hosts took the lead after twenty minutes of play through Bouanga, but conceded a blow as Kolodziejczak was sent off just before half time, leaving PSG 45 minutes to fight off a 10 man home side.

To make matters even worse, Marquinhos put the score level after a Messi assist. The man more situation didn't liven up the visitors' spirits, it seemed, and Saint-Etienne had no trouble handling the PSG efforts. But just when a draw seemed a likely result, Messi decided differently, first by teeing up Di Maria, and later on in producing his third assist, this time again for Marquinhos. By the end of the game, Neymar was forced to be taken off injured, after a duel with Macon . (KV)

Manchester City - West Ham United 2-1

Manchester City again piggy-backed Liverpool to second place in the Premier League, beating a sturdy West Ham United side. City piled on the pressure from the start. Mahrez' opener was cancelled out due to off-side, but a bit later the 1-0 arrived anyway, with Gündogan firing in a Mahrez cross.

With snow drifts entering the stadium the groundskeepers had a lot of work to do at half-time, but they did a fine job in keeping the pitch free of snow. City kept pushing forward, with Sterling and Gabriel Jesus missing some chances, but by the absolute end of the game Fernandinho made it 2-0. West Ham saved the best for last: in the final minute of stoppage time, Lanzini smashed in a volley off the post. With Chelsea drawing against Manchester United, City now draws closer to leaders Chelsea, trailing just the one point. (EV)

RB Leipzig – Bayer Leverkusen 1-3

The eleven that had been so industrious against Club Brugge now faced a higher ranked Leverkusen. RB Leipzig's Red Bull Arena was the (empty) stage for thi game, seeing the visitors starting out best and making the most of the space offered by the hosts. Warning bells first chimed after eight minutes, Diaby scoring from off-side position. Not much later, the visitors still managed to opn the score through Florian Wirtz and a second soon followed  as Moussa Diaby left goalkeeper Martinez without a chance. A disappointing 0-2 was on the boards at half time; with striker Brobbey taken off during the break, it went without saying that Leipzig had quite some work to do.

An improved Leipzig in the second half, and Andre Silva managed to narrow the gap through Nkunku. But those who thought the Rote Bullen were off for a come-back were quickly set back by Jeremie Frimpong's goal. No more goals followed, leaving Leipzig bound tightly to its eighth spot in the Bundesliga. (KN)
