Werder Bremen - Club Brugge: Club Facts

Club prepare the second part of the season in Spanish Sotogrande from 5 till 13 January and will play two friendlies. Werder Bremen is Club's first opponent, on Monday 9 January.

Werder Bremen is a Bundesliga club located in Northern Germany by the river Wezer. The Green-Whites aren't having their best season so far being fifteenth with sixteen points.

Last year Werder had a rough season as well. Djilobodji's 88th minute goal in the last match of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt was enough for Werder Bremen to stay in the Bundesliga.

Since the Bundesliga was founded, in 1963, Werder Bremen have always played in the German top division apart from the 1980-81 season. They've won four titles (1965, 1988, 1993 and 2004) and lifted the German cup six times (1961, 1991, 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009) and the German Supercup thrice (1988, 1993 and 1994).

Werder's biggest European success was winning the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup. To reach that final they had to see off... Club Brugge. Club won the first leg thanks to an early goal by Daniel Amokachi, but Die Werderaner won the second leg 2-0 thanks to Marco Bode and Manfred Bockenfeld. In the final, played in Lissabon, the German outfit was too strong for AS Monaco. Allofs and Rufer scored the goals in the 2-0 victory.

That game was Club's only encounter with Werder Bremen in an official game. So far the Blues have won 8 games against German teams, 5 games ended on a draw and 12 games resulted in a defeat.

Werder's current coach is the 37-year-old German Alexander Nouri. He is the successor of Viktor Skripnik who was layed off in September after a poor season start. Earlier Nouri was head coach of VfB Oldenburg and the assistant coach at Werder Bremen.

Werder count fourteen internationals in their squad who have all earned an international call-up last year: Germans Serge Gnabry and Max Kruse, the Malian Sambou Yatabaré, the Austrian Zlatko Junuzovic, the American Aron Jóhansson, the Peruan Claudio Pizarro, the Bosnian Izet Hajrovic, the Fin Niklas Moisander, the Senegalese Fallou Diagne and Lamine Sané, the Czechs Jaroslav Drobny and Theodor Gebre Selassie, the Greek Thanos Petson and the Dane Thomas Delaney.

Delaney was signed during this transfer window. He left FC Copenhagen in January and played against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage. The Danish midfielder scored a great goal from distance against the Blues in Copenhagen.

Clemens Frits wears the captains' armband for the green and white. The German 36-year-old midfielder joined in 2006 from Bayer 04 Leverkusen and played 284 league matches for Werder. After this season he is presumed to say football farewell.

One of Werder's biggest talents is Serge Gnabry. The German playmaker, with an Ivorian father and a German mother, left Arsenal FC in the Summer and almost immediately showed his talent with this beauty against Borrusia Möngengladbach (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BuloKDTDBo). Meanwhile he tops the club's top scorer rank with seven goals. Last Summer he played with the German U23 in Rio and made it to the final against Brazil. Germany lost in the penalty shoot-out, but Gnabry impressed with six goals in six games. In November Gnabry was selected for the Mannschaft and he scored three goals in his maiden match against San Marino.

There's one player who has played for both teams: Joseph Akpala. The Nigerian forward moved from Club to Werder Bremen in the Summer of 2012, but Akpala struggled to gather playing time. After one season Akpala played for Turkish side Kardemir Karabükspor on loan who eventually bought him.

This is a list of Belgians who ever played for Werder Bremen: Koen Casteels (2015), Kevin De Bruyne (2012-13) and Jelle Van Damme (2005-06).

These Germans have played for Club Brugge in the past: Werner Hoffmann (1962-63), Marc-André Kruska (2009), Stefan Reisch (1968-70) and Rolf Rüssmann (1973). The Blues have had two German head coaches: Christoph Daum (2011-12) en Georg Keßler (1982-84).

The game will be played at the Stadium Municpal San Pedro de Alcantara in Marbella at 18:00.
