Brilliant come-from-behind victory for 10-man Club Brugge against Genk

On matchday 16 of the Jupiler Pro League Club Brugge travelled to the Cegeka Arena for the top match against KRC Genk. The blue and black opened the scoring in the first half through Vanaken, but were reduced to ten after a second booking for Van der Brempt. Early in the second half Hrošovský volleyed home the equaliser and gave Genk the lead with a second goal, but Lang and Ricca secured the win for Club.

After the catastrophe against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, the blue and black wanted to bounce back against KRC Genk. Head coach Philippe Clement made three changes to his starting eleven. Brandon Mechele, Eduard Sobol and Mats Rits joined the team at the expense of Stanley Nsoki, Kamal Sowah and Bas Dost. For KRC Genk, the most important absentee was Paul Onuachu. The tall striker was absent due to illness. Genk captain Bryan Heynen started on the bench.

It was a high-paced start from both sides. Genk had most of the ball, but it was Club with a first glance at goal. De Ketelaere sent Rits trough on goal, but Vandevoordt had rushed out and was first on the ball. Genk responded by monopolizing the ball and a goal by Trésor in the 10th minute, but that was canceled out because of a prior foul by Thorstvedt on Hendry. A few minutes later Bongonda crashed his effort against the outside of the post from an acute angle. On the other side of the pitch Mechele's left-footed strike just went past the wrong side of the far post and De Ketelaere headed into the arms of Vandevoordt.

The tempo dropped a little after the first quarter of an hour. Genk still had most of the ball, but carved out little chances. Club blew the game right open again on minute 35. Lang had time and space to pick out Vanaken at the far post with a brilliant cross and the midfielder smashed his fifth of the season into the roof of the net. Club tried to get a second right away when Rits was played the ball inside the penalty area, but his effort took a deflection and was turned into a corner kick. The blue and black were in control, but were reduced to ten when Van der Brempt fouled Bongonda and was booked a second time, a few minutes before the half-time break.

Despite the numerical advantage for the home side, there were no changes at the break. However, Club switched to a 4-4-1 formation with De Ketelaere up front. It was immediately clear that Genk was looking for a swift response ... and they did. Four minutes into the second half De Ketelaere headed away a corner kick into the path of Hrošovský who slammed it into the top corner from outside the box. The pace of the match dropped again after that goal until twenty minutes before the end. Trésor scuffed his finish wide twice and Thorstvedt steered his effort wide.

Genk created the majority of the chances and it was again Hrošovský who found the back of the net. This time he surprised Mignolet when he brushed it in from outside the area. But Club - with ten - showed resilience, under the command of Vormer, who had just come on. The Dutchman found De Ketelaere with a low cross who then teed up Lang and the Dutch international poked it home cooly: 2-2. The goal sparked Club's desire to get the three points and a few minutes after Lang's equaliser Ricca headed in on Vormer's corner kick: 2-3!

After this wonderful comeback, Club didn't get into trouble anymore and secured a massive come-from-behind win at KRC Genk. Club showed a lot of character and this match will be one for the history books. With this win Club comes three points closer to Union who now lead by four points. On Wednesday Club is back on the road, this time for the Belgian cup, against ... KRC Genk.
