City derby ends in 2-2 draw

Matchday 26 of the Jupiler Pro League featured the city derby between Cercle Brugge and Club Brugge. Blauw-Zwart took the lead in the first half through Lang on a pass from Jutglà. Early in the second half Denkey pulled the home side level. Nielsen put Club back in front with a great goal, but Somers saved a point for Cercle with a header.

After Wednesday's defeat against Benfica, coach Parker brought some new players for the derby against Cercle. Mata had to settle for the bench and was replaced by Odoi. Nielsen was given the nod again and in the heart of the defence Sylla teamed up with Hendry. A final change occurred in the offensive department, where Jutglà started in the striker position. As a result, Lang moved to his preferred left flank at the expense of Sowah.

An inspired home side started the game lively, claiming most of the ball. That resulted in four corner kicks in the first 5 minutes, but Mignolet could not be put to the test. A few minutes later Denkey's strike flew wide. Just ten minutes into the game Denkey tried his luck from outside the box. His effort took a deflection and Mignolet was forced into making a good save. Club created a first chance after a quarter of an hour, but Majecki and the post denied Jutglà from scoring the opening goal. It came a few minutes later when Jutglà latched onto Odoi's through ball and played it into the path of Lang, who tapped it home.

Despite the lead, Club did continue to struggle with a smooth-playing Cercle. Another corner kick was met by Ravych, but he headed over. Shortly after, it was up to Mignolet to show his skills. The goalie reacted swiftly by saving a shot from an acute angle with his feet. The danger continued to come from the home side, but even Siquet could not outsmart Mignolet with his free kick. He tipped the ball from beneath the bar. Shortly before half-time, Siquet sent Somers through on goal, but he attempt was from a too tight angle and Mignolet kept it out. deep ball in the direction of Somers. The last chance of the first half was for Blauw-Zwart, but Odoi's header was no problem for Majecki.

As in the first half, it was again the home team that got off to the best start. Vanhoutte tried his luck with a volley, but it went wide. After five minutes Cercle did find the way to goal: Somers darted into the area behind Club's defence and picked out Denkey in front of goal. The forward sidefooted it into the far corner.

Blauw-Zwart had to recover from this blow and the home team smelled its chance. In a messy phase in front of Mignolet's goal, Somers was able to hit the ball, but he aimed too high. The biggest chance followed a few minutes later where a free kick was swung in front of goal. Daland was able to head in freely, but Mignolet had a clever save to keep Club into the game.

While Cercle dictated the pace of the game, it was Club that scored again. Nielsen was feeded the ball just outside the area and the Dane curled it into the top corner. But just a few minutes later Somers restored the balance when he headed in on a corner kick. Somers was the most dangerous player for the hosts. Five minutes before the end he looked like keeping the three points home, but Mignolet went down quickly and tipped the ball around the far post.

Deep into stoppage time Yaremchuk fired at goal, but his shot was too central to make it difficult for Majecki, so the match ended in a draw. Next week Club hosts KAA Gent.
