The previous games
On Saturday, Club plays the 42ndedition of the Brugse Metten, where it takes on AZ Alkmaar for a third time.
Outside of the Bruges Metten, the clubs have already met several times for a practice match. The most recent practice game is from 2019. Then AZ won 5-2 after goals from Albert Gudmundsson, Calvin Stengs, Bjørn Johnsen, Ferdy Druijf, Loïs Openda & Jelle Vossen. The last time the Dutch descended on Jan Breydel for the Brugge Metten, Club won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Wesley Sonck.
Of the previous 41 Bruges Metten, Club managed to win 21 times. Of the last ten editions, FCB won no less than nine times!
The opponent
The Alkmaarders have been a fixture in the highest Dutch soccer league, the Eredivisie, since 1996. In 2009 they got to put the championship trophy in the air and in 2013 they won the Cup after a game against PSV Eindhoven. AZ played a fine European campaign last season and made it to the semifinals of the UEFA Conference League. The Dutch also did well in their own league, finishing fourth.
With AZ, some familiar faces also return to Jan Breydel. Mathew Ryan is now between the posts at the opponent and Jordy Clasie also drops down to Brugge. The midfielder played at Club on loan from Southampton in '17-'18.
AZ, like Blauw-Zwart, has already had a solid practice campaign. The Dutch already played four practice matches, of which it was able to win twice and draw twice. During the most recent practice game on Wednesday, July 19, coach Pascal Jansen's men played a 1-1 draw against Norwich City.
