Club won 2-0 over Sporting Charleroi at home on the 27th match day. Mats Rits was the hero of the evening with two clever goals. Union's defeat brings Club closer to within nine points of the leader.
Coach Alfred Schreuder could not call on Tajon Buchanan, Bas Dost and Eder Balanta. The Canadian winger tested positive for COVID-19 and had to be absent for the match. Dost stayed home with an injury and Eder Balanta was suspended. At the back, the trio of Mata, Mechele and Nsoki started. Skov Olsen and Sobol took charge of the flanks. Rits, Odoi and Vanaken were to man the midfield. Lang and De Ketelaere had to provide the goals.
Club took control in the early stages and played with pressure forward. However, this did not immediately lead to major chances. The first opportunity of the game fell on the other side when Heymans tried from long range, but Mignolet could easily save. Just after the quarter hour mark, Nsoki had had enough and started a real solo. He dribbled past everyone and everything and found Rits with his cross. His overhead kick went wide.
Moments later, there was a first giant chance for Club. De Ketelaere made his way into the penalty area and found Sobol, who was all alone just meters from the goal. The Ukrainian decided to check, allowing goalkeeper Kamara to turn his attempt into a corner.
After a period without major chances and balanced midfield play, Club was suddenly there with a sharp counter. Nsoki held off his man well and via Vanaken Odoi was able to steam through. He served the onrushing Rits, who scored convincingly with his left. About ten minutes before half time Club had the lead. A few minutes later, Lang almost doubled the lead. De Ketelaere delightfully painted a cross towards the Dutchman, but his volley went over goal. We dove into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
