Club draws 1-1 away against Standard

Club Brugge have drawn 1-1 with Standard. The blue and black were close to a 0-1 win following a first-half goal by Krépin Diatta, but the hosts leveled from the spot in stoppage time.

Club's starting eleven saw three changes compared to the 3-0 home win against Anderlecht a fortnight ago. Brandon Mechele returned in the heart of defence, forcing Odilon Kossounou on the bench. The recovered Michael Krmenčík and Emmanuel Dennis were given the nod. Badji and De Ketelaere were on the bench. New signing Noa Lang started on the bench as well.

The home side didn't show too much initiative at the start of the game. Club had most of the ball, but showed some defensive errors which led to a couple of opportunities for Standard, who started with three pacy forwards Carcela, Balikwisha and Lestienne. Balikwisha tried his luck twice after a defensive error, but Simon Deli was on the right place to clear the ball. Club responded with efforts by Vanaken and Dennis. Vanaken's shot was blocked, while Dennis' effort took a deflection and sailed centimeters wide.

Les Rouches played agressively and put a lot of pressure on Club, but weren't dangerous anymore. Baliwhisha's looping header and Lestienne's tame shot didn't trouble Mignolet. A few minutes before half-time, Club upped the pressure on Standard. Krmenčík and Dennis couldn't convert on a cross by Sobol, but five minutes before the break Krépin Diatta broke the deadlock when he hammered home Dennis' low cross in front of goal.

At the break Noa Lang came on for Dennis to make his debut. The first chance of the second half was for Standard, but Lestienne couldn't head in the corner kick. Afterwards it was Lang who stood in the spotlight. First the Dutchman tried to feed Krmenčík and then he created two chances for himself. He forced Bodart into making a diving save with a long-range low drive and again when he headed the ball towards goal on a free-kick by Vormer.

Instead of doubling the lead, Standard had a good chance of leveling on the hour mark. Defender Vanheusden darted into the box, looking to make contact with a defender and was rewarded for it with a spot kick. But Simon Mignolet didn't cooperate and kept out Lestienne's spot kick. Minutes later Vanheusden went forward again, but his shot took a deflection on Deli and went wide.

Fifteen minutes before the end Lestienne did find the back of the net on a pass by Oulare, but Oulare had been in an offside position, so the goal was chalcked off.

Club looked like taking the three points home, but in the third minute of extra time Standard was given another penalty. A cross by Cop hit Rit's in the stomach, before looping against his elbow. That was enough for Laforge to award another penalty to Standard. Nicolas Gavory sent Mignolet the wrong way to make it 1-1.

Not a sixth win in a row for Club Brugge, but the point is enough to be top of the league.
