Club in Europe after the winter break despite 1-3 defeat against Real

Club Brugge ended this year's Champions League campaign with a 1-3 defeat against Real Madrid. Hans Vanaken leveled after Rodrygo's opening goal, but Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric handed the visitors the three points. But Club will still play in the Europa League after the winter break because of PSG's win against Galatasaray.

Philippe Clement had quite some work with Clinton Mata and Krépin Diatta suspended. Odilon Kossounou replaced Mata and teamed up with Deli who was back again. Ricca was on the bench. On the right-hand side Thibault Vlietinck played instead of Diatta. In front Emmanuel Dennis and Percy Tau played instead of Okereke and Schrijvers.

Militao had the first glance at goal for the visitors from Madrid, but the blue and black quicky took over the game. Dennis did everything right except having a go at goal, Percy Tau was denied from closeby by Areola and Balanta fired the rebound a meter wide.

Real Madrid responded through Jovic who was sent through on goal, but Mignolet was equal to the effort.

It was a lively game with chances on both ends, but it was referee Stieler who wanted some of the attention. Modric, Balanta, Kossonou, Sobol, Claudemir and others soon had a caution. Club had the game under control, but were lucky when Isco's shot went wide. The Spanish international cut inside and drove it wide.

On the stroke of half-time Tau's brilliant back heel feeded Dennis who curled it past Areola but the Nigerian had just strayed offside.

At the start of the second half Club almost broke the deadlock, but Vanaken didn't make good enough contact on the volley, Areola saved easily. It was Real Madrid that opened the scoring. A cross from Odriozola took a deflection, into the path of Rodrygo who slotted it home beautifully with the outside of his boot.

But Club was level just two minutes later when Hans Vanaken curled it into the far corner from the edge of the box!

Club searched for a second, but it was Real that took the lead again. Vinicius Junior was quick to respond after a goalmouth scramble to pounce home from closeby.

Club didn't give up and was dangerous, mainly through Dennis. His first effort was saved by Areola, then the goalkeeper did well on a low cross and a header from the Nigerian went just wide.

The final minutes were intense with chances for both teams. Luka Modric skied his finish, while Dennis had another good chance. After good build-up play he tried to curl it into the far corner, but he just missed the target.

In stoppage time Modric took away all doubt when he sidefooted the ball past Mignolet against the back of the net.

As Galatasaray lost against Paris Saint-Germain, Club Brugge finish third in Group A and thus qualify for the Europa League 1/16th finals.
