The game

The first match of the season is the game between champion Club Brugge and cup winner KAA Gent. This is the 42nd edition of the Belgian Supercup and the 20th in the history of Club Brugge. Club is the Belgian record holder after having lifted the Supercup 16 times.

Club played the previous eleven Supercups as the national champion and therefore hosted the match. Those games all ended with a win. Six times Club needed penalties to win the Supercup.

It's the second time KAA Gent is Club's opponent in the Supercup. The last time was in 2015 at the Ghelamco Arena. Hans Vanaken made his debut for Club in that game, which was won by Gent following a late goal by Laurent Depoitre.

If the game is tied after ninety minutes, the game will not go to extra time but there will be immediately a penalty shootout.

The opponent

AA Gent barely missed out on a ticket for the Champions Play-Offs last season after an impressive comeback, but they did win the Europe Play-Offs. Hein Vanhaezebrouck's side also managed to reach the 1/8th finals of the Europa Conference League.

KAA Gent is in the Supercup after beating Anderlecht in the Belgian Cup final on penalties. It was the fourth time (after 1964, 1984 and 2010) that Gent could lift the Belgian Cup.

This summer the club parted ways with Sinan Bolat (KVC Westerlo), Christopher Operi (AC Le Havre), Yonas Malede (KV Mechelen), Giorgi Chakhvetadze (Slovan Bratislava), Gianni Bruno (STVV), Roman Bezus (contract expired) and Jordan Torunarigha (returned to Hertha BSC after loan spell).

They welcomed the following players:

  • Midfielder Anderson Niangbo (back from a loan spell at Sturm Graz)
  • attackers Hugo Cuypers (KV Mechelen), Malick Fofana (academy player) and Jordan Botaka (back from a loan spell at Fortuna Sittard)

Milestones

  • Hans Vanaken can play his 340th official match for Club Brugge.
  • Éder Balanta can play his 100th game for the blue and black since his arrival in 2019. He played 70 league fixtures, 11 cup games, 1 Supercup and 17 European fixtures..

The man in black

Erik Lambrechts has been appointed referee for this Supercup. He will be assisted by Mathias Hillaert and Philippe Vandecauter. Bert Put is the fourth official. It's Lambrechts' 32nd official game for both Club and Gent.
