Club held to stalemate at Charleroi

Club Brugge failed to win the rearranged match at Charleroi. After an intense game in which the blue and black clearly had the upper hand - especially in the second half - either side had managed to find the back of the net.

Five different names on Philippe Clement's tactical board compared to Sunday's fixture at KV Kortrijk. Brandon Mechele returned in the starting eleven, forcing Mitrovic on the bench. Eduard Sobol and the recovered Emmanuel Dennis played on the wings instead of Ricca and Schrijvers. In midfield Mats Rits replaced Balanta. Up front Percy Tau was chosen over Openda. Hans Vanaken was a bit ill yesterday, but he was fit enough to play.

Charleroi started the game lively, but Club had the first real chance after just one minute when Dennis intercepted in midfield and played the ball to De Ketelaere, but his shot was parried away by Penneteau. A few minutes later Tau curled his effort just wide. The hosts had most of the ball, but didn't create any danger apart from a shot by Bruno.

The blue and black had less of the ball, but were more threatening. Penneteau had to intercept a cross from Tau and Vanaken's left-footed strike trickled just wide off the post.

Halfway the first half Club dictated the pace of the game but couldn't open the scoring. Desseoleil's back pass was too short, but De Ketelaere couldn't take advantage of it and Vormer blasted one over the bar. On the stroke of half-time Mignolet needed a good reflex save to keep out Nicholson's header, Gholizadeh fired the rebound wide.

The second half could have started with a spot kick for the blue and black when Charles De Ketelaere was brought down inside the box, but referee Laforge waved play on. The hosts were mainly defending the 0-0 score, making it hard for Club to poke a hole in the defence. Sobol tried it with a long-range effort, but was off the mark.

Philippe Clement brought on fresh legs after an hour play. It were Krépin Diatta's first minutes in 2020. The change looked to give Club the extra punch, because they quickly had two fine chances to break the deadlock. De Ketelaere feeded Vormer, but Penneteau was equal to the effort of the captain and a few minutes later he made a splendid diving save to keep out Dennis' shot.

But the fire went out rather quickly. Charleroi defended well and Club didn't have the ideas to get past them. When Dennis finally had some time and space, he aimed his effort wide.

When Dennis did beat Penneteau in stoppage time, his goal was disallowed because of an earlier offside position of Vormer.

Club is now nine points ahead of Gent and Antwerp who are joint second.
