Club kicks off 2021 with 1-2 win at STVV

Club Brugge started the new year with a 1-2 win away against Sint-Truiden. Bas Dost quickly scored on his debut and Noa Lang doubled the lead just past the half-hour mark. STVV pulled one back through Buatu after the break. Thanks to this win Club is four points ahead of second in the league Genk.

Philippe Clement made two changes to his line-up compared to the home match against Eupen on Boxing Day. Bas Dost played up front and was assisted by Diatta and Lang on the wings. Charles De Ketelaere moved to midfield to replace the suspended Hans Vanaken. On the left-hand side Eduard Sobol was favoured over Federico Ricca. For Stefano Denswil the game came too soon after he signed his loan deal. Kossounou and Mechele paired up as central defensive duo.

As Genk, Charleroi, Anderlecht and Antwerp all suffered a defeat, Club Brugge was handed a golden chance to widen the lead. The blue and black started lively from the start, but the first chance was for the hosts. Durkin whipped in a cross for Suzuki who just couldn't get on the end of it.

Club's response was swift as Diatta's low cross fell into the path of Lang who blasted it over the crossbar. Twelve minutes into the game, the deadlock was already broken: De Ketelaere picked out Bas Dost in front of goal with a brilliant forward pass and Bas Dost smashed it past goalkeeper Schmidt. What a great goal to open your account!

Club didn't loosen its grip on the hosts. Diatta forced Schmidt into making a diving save, an effort by Vormer was blocked and Dost just couldn't tap in a cross by Lang. Later Lang's shot took a deflection on a defender to go wide.

Ten minutes before the break Club scored the well-deserved second goal. After a great attacking move by Diatta on the right-hand side, the Senegalese played the ball to Noa Lang and the Dutchman placed the ball into the top corner. Just before the half-time whistle Vormer fired over the crossbar.

Bas Dost stayed in the dressing room at half-time and was replaced by David Okereke. Sint-Truiden wanted to get back into the game and started the second half with the desire to make the game interesting again. Teixeira headed a first chance wide and a few minutes later Nazon scuffed his finish wide. After those two half-chances, The Canaries got back into the game when De Ridder picked out Jonathan Buatu who headed in.

The goal was a moral boost for the hosts who wanted more - and came close to it. Duckens Nazon slipped through the offside trap but his strike died against the outside of the post. After almost conceding the equaliser, Club created a great chance to put the game to bed with a third goal. After a brilliant interception by Diatta, the Senegalese feeded the ball to Okereke but the Nigerian missed his chance. On the other side of the pitch Mignolet kept out an effort by Durkin and Suzuki headed the ball wide.

Philippe Clement brought on some fresh legs to help bag the three poins. Ricca and Balanta came on for Sobol and Lang, which meant De Ketelaere moved to the front again and Okereke on the left-hand side. Club took over control again and created a couple of half-decent chances with Okereke and De Ketelaere. Just before the end Nazo was sent off with a straight red card after hitting Kossounou in the face, but the score didn't change anymore.

With this win, Club is now four points ahead of Genk and nine on Charleroi.
